Aziz Wins 100 in Zagreb

ZAGREB, Croatia - Aziz Zakari of Ghana won the men's 100 at the IAAF Grand Prix meet on Monday in 10.17, beating Shawn Crawford of the United States by two-hundredths of a second. Brit Jason Gardener was third in 10.22.

Olympic and world championships medalist Merlene Ottey won the women's 100 meters over a weak field .

Ottey, 43, was timed in 11.42 seconds before a packed stadium in ideal summer conditions.

"It's good to win but I'm not happy with the time, I should have run a much faster race," she said.

Ottey said she is pacing herself for next month's World Championships in Paris.

"My goal is the world championship, and if I peak at the right time there is no telling what can happen," the Jamaican-born Ottey said.

In the men's 110 hurdles, Duane Ross of the United States ran the third-fastest time this season, a 13.17. Xiang Liu of China was seconds by five-hundredths of a second, while Chris Phillips, also of the United States, was third in 13.36.

In other events, Crawford clocked 20.10 to lead a 1-2-3 U.S. sweep in the 200, edging Bernard Williams, last week's winner at the Golden League in Paris; Kemel Thompson of Jamaica won the 400 hurdles in a personal-best 48.24; Dwight Phillips of the United States won the long jump at 26 feet; Natasha Danvers of Britain won the women's 400 hurdles in a personal-best 54.32; and in the hammer throw, Manuela Montebrun of France went 241-10, just beating Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska of Poland.
