Akuafo retain Cowbell Cross Country trophy

Accra, Oct. 4, GNA - Akuafo Hall of the University of Ghana retained the annual Cowbell Inter-Hall Cross Country trophy it won last year, scoring 170 points to win this year's competition held at Legon on Friday. Sarbah Hall, took the second position with 251 points, Legon Hall was third with 290 points while Commonwealth Hall placed fourth with 475 points.
Akuafo, also won the Ladies event with 39 points, Volta Hall was second with 58 points, Sarbah came third with 80 points while Legon Hall took the fourth position with 145 points. In the individual race, Alhaji Zakaria Issifu of Akuafo Hall broke his own record of 57.37 minutes he set last year with a new time of 57.08 minutes to win the 15-kilometre race for the second time. Swanzy Hammond of Sarbah was second with a time of 57.52 minutes while Prince Charles Baffour of Akuafo was third with a time of 59.02 minutes.
In the Ladies category, Phillis Brantie also of Akuafo and winner of last year's event scale of the rest with a time of 43 minutes in the 10-kilometre race. Diana Akua Ahenkora of Volta Hall came second while Eunice Sermodzi of Akuafo placed third a minute later.
Mr Dirk Laleremans, Managing Director of Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of Cowbell, gave the assurance that the company would sponsor the event in the ensuing years. Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, Vice Chancellor of the University, called on the participants, to take sporting activities seriously as sports also help to build a strong mind and body for academic work.
