Ghana is an underdeveloped country characterized by ethnic and political discrimination. The University of Ghana -Legon has beautiful physical edifices comparable to many American Universities. It is the most beautiful university in Ghana. However, the University enrollment is high and it is charaterized by a very high student faculty ratio. In one class you can have as many as 2000 students with just 1 professor in front lecturing. Aside that it is characterized by labs with obsolete equipment and an equally obsolete curriculum.
Unlike the top Universities across the globe no essays or extracurricular activities are required for admission. Admissions into Ghanaian public universities are segmented into four.
* Segment 1 is the largest. It is called the regular segment. Students in this segment pay regular school fees. Admission to this segment is based on merit, it is competitive. The only thing you need is a West Africa Secondary School Certificate with good grades or an “A” Level certificate. Only Ghanaians and refugees living in Ghana can apply to this segment.
* Segment 2. It is called the “fee-paying” segment. Students in this segment pay a far higher school fees. Students in this segment had lower grades on their West Africa Secondary School Certificate. They would have been denied admission under segment 1. “A” Level is also acceptable. Only Ghanaians and refugees living in Ghana are entitled to this segment.
* Segment 3. It is called the protocol segment. Only Ghanaians are entitled to this segment. Students in this segment pay the regular school fees. It is reserved for the family members of senior government officials and University authorities. A West Africa Secondary School Certificate or “A” Level is required. It is not competitive.
* Segment 4. This is the segment for international students. International students pay the highest school fees as the government of Ghana does not subsidize tuition. It is available to Ghanaians and foreigners. It is competitive. A West Africa Secondary School Certificate, “A” level, IB, German gymnasium or its equivalent is accepted.
This is the same system used by all public universities in Ghana.
