Committee Of Enquiry Hears Evidence From Public

The committee of enquiry set-up by the Ashanti Regional Security Committee and the Regional Co-ordinating Council to investigate the shooting incident that led to the death of a soccer fan after a recent league match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Obuasi Goldfields Football Club has began hearing evidence, from the general public.

Officials of Obuasi Goldfields first appeared before the committee to give evidence. They include the coach, Mr Oti Akenteng, the acting manager, Mr Agustine Kwabena Kessie, and the team manager, Mr Frank Oppong.

The committee also interviewed some para-medics of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

According to the evidence collected so far, after the match, the police water- cannon vehicle, christened E.R.T. Madjitey, was conveying behind the ambulance carrying the para-medics when a shot believed to have been fired from the water-cannon was heard.

The police water-cannon then overtook the ambulance whilst tooting its siren. When the vehicle got to the traffic-lights at the Bregina Junction, another shot, which according to evidence, was fired by the police personnel, manning the water-cannon, was heard.

Sensing danger, the paramedics diverted to a different route rather than following the water-cannon, fearing that another shot might be fired.

The para-medics could, however, not confirm whether the shots fired from the police water-cannon hit and killed the soccer fan and injured the others. But they were very sure that the gun-shots were fired from the police water-cannon.

In another development, autopsy on the deceased had been performed with the help of a ballistic expert, and the report would be submitted to the committee at the subsequent sitting.

As the committee continues its sitting, the general public is once again reminded to willingly appear before it to give vital information that will aid the committee greatly in its findings.
