Opeele slams Grant for asking local players to stay

Ex-Black Starlets Assistant trainer, Isaac Opeele Boateng insists Black Stars Coach Avram Grant had it completely wrong when he proposed that locally based players must remain in the Ghana Premier League for at least two years before jumping at foreign contracts.

Home-based players are in a rush to leave the domestic top flight not only to improve their chances of earning a call-up into the mainstream Black Stars team, but also to boost their financial standing.

Grant feels locally based players who join the exodus bandwagon hurriedly without developing themselves well enough for the European market will only make them fail abroad and make a quick return home after these players fail to impress their foreign employers.

But, Isaac Opeele Boateng believes the former Chelsea Boss’ advice is not realistic since Ghanaian clubs are still paying meager salaries to players, who have huge family responsibilities.

“Maybe Avram Grant does not know the state of the Ghanaian economy. It’s not easy. Some clubs pay players 100 and 150 cedis monthly with some players being owed three to four months salaries. It’s not possible for you to tell a player to stay here for two to three years,” Opeele Boateng said.
