Friendly match ends abruptly

Oblogo (GR), Jan 2, GNA - A new year cup match played at the Oblogo park, organised between Oblogo and Weija communities ended abruptly in the 80th minute when supporters of Weija poured onto the field to vent their anger on the referee for awarding an infringement against them. The friendly match organized by the Chief of Oblogo, Nii Kwaku Bibini the third, was to strengthen the relationship between the two communities of Oblogo and Weija.

The Weija team led by Hassan Mohammed of Accra Hearts of Oak fame, were leading by 2-1 when the incident occurred with goals scored by Sulley Mohammed and Willie Lisah while Baby Nii scored for Oblogo. The violence started when the Weija fans apparently felt the last minute infringement awarded against them by the referee was to be a penalty and this resulted in both players and supporters meeting the decision with a protest and boycott.

After the tension had died down, the referee said the infringement should be an indirect free kick but refused to continue the match due to the conduct of the supporters apparently afraid that his life was under threat and accordingly called off the match.

The Oblogo chief, Nii Bibini the third, who was to present the trophy to the match winner expressed concern about the attitude and conduct of the Weija fans but gave the assurance that the match would be replayed at a later date.
