Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has said some kind words about Portland Timbers shot-stopper Adam Kwarasey, as calls for the return of the Norwegian-born heightens.

The former Stromsgodset captain has failed to make himself available for national call-ups since falling out with then Black Stars goalkeepers trainer Nassamu Yakubu at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

The 27-year-old lost his starting place to Dauda at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, but looked set to be Ghana’s first choice at the World Cup following Dauda’s continuous struggle for game time at club level.

However, as the Black Stars’ technical team – led by head coach Kwesi Appiah and Yakubu – dropped Kwarasey for Dauda after Ghana’s opening day 2-1 defeat to the USA.

“Kwarasey is a very good guy,” Dauda told Nhyira FM.

“I remember before the 2013 Afcon, he was the first choice goalkeeper for the national team but I had my opportunity in the tournament.

“Could you believe that he talked to me prior to every game during the tournament, and I was even surprised?

“We all have natural feelings and I expected him to probably react in a different way, but he didn’t.”

Kwarasey’s recent purple patch in Major League Soccer, coupled with current Ghana No.1 Razak Brimah’s uninspiring displays, has increased calls for Kwarasey’s return.

“His attitude was superb and I have learnt a lot from him,” Dauda added.

“He backed me while I was in post without any problems. We never had an issue and we still don’t have.”

Ghana coach Avram Grant had talks with Kwarasey in April, but the outcome of the meeting was not revealed.
