This is the fault of both the scientists and the various industries. The researchers and the industries should be bed-fellows. Get the investors, the entrepreneurs and the scientist together and discuss the problems being faced by the industries and their ideas for development. The scientist go to the lab with monies donated from industries to find scientific solutions to the problems and thy will find relevant answers to problems that the industries are encountering. This is the prime objective of tertiary education, to produced skilled and thoughtful manpower and innovations to better the industries based on scientific evidence. The lecturers and scientists are waiting for government grants to do science and to research. The sciences and researches must benefit the everyday person. So if the direction of the research is useful to the masses, businesses will be happy to support the science and research because it’s the industries who will benefit in the end. Even laws, regulations and others must have scientific backing. This applies to all sectors of the economy, insurance companies, banks and other elements of trade and commerce will benefit prom scientific studies on how best to run their businesses. If I was a minister of science and technology, it is a matter of getting businesses and industry heads to sit down with the leading researchers in the various universities and let them talk on how best each can be of help to each other. Scientists want to publish papers, lead research and come out with innovative methods of doing things. Industries want best practices that will improve their activities. So everyone gains, students are taught the things that the researchers find in their researches and not have to teach from text books. But real ‘’gaani gaani’’ science that the students will appreciate and relate to as well. ‘Easy peezi’
Example. New Zealand Ministry of primary industries wanted to control the sale of fresh, milk from farms to homes without having them pasteurised because lots of people want fresh milk which they claim taste better and more nutritious. So what did MPI do? They contracted researchers from Massey University to look into the taste of fresh milk versus pasteurised milk, the nutritional values of one against the other, the risks of one against the other. The university spend money donated by the government, the milk industries and farmers group to do the research. Scientific evidence is found and the ministry then amend the law on fresh milk sale from the farm gates based on sound research findings. Everyone goes home happy the masses in NZ are happy because they can drink or not drink fresh milk based on scientific evidence. Simple.
