"We have a cancer (corruption) within, it's close to the Presidency, that is growing. It's growing daily".
What happened to the commission set up by the Late President Mills(RIP) to investigate the corruption claims pertaining to the purchase of five jets and expensive hangars spearheaded by then Vice President now President Mahama.
President Mills stated clearly on 19th February, 2009 in his
State Of the Nations Address to the parliament that "Ghana simply cannot afford the expenditure at this time and we certainly do not need two presidential jets"
Unknown to President Mills and the whole of Ghana, then Chairman of Armed forces Council, who's now President Mahama was receiving a delegation from Brazil and negotiating the acquisition of five jets and expensive hangars.
The 22nd October 2012 issue of front page newspaper reported that the Late President Mills wanted then Vice President now President Mahama to be investigated Embrear 190 deal.
What most people were at pains to comprehend was that the Ghana Government, led by then Vice-President John Dramani Mahama, who was also the head of the government’s delegation to the manufacturers in Brazil, agreed to pay $55 million for the Embraer 190 Jet, against the manufacturer’s own price of $28.5 million or $40 million, irrespective of enhanced accessories.
What is more, the John Mahama deal indicated that the government had requested the option of configuration to convert the luxury jet into a military aircraft. As a result of the new specification, the cost of the aircraft ballooned to $88 million. The configuration included an extra fuel tank at a cost of $8m, air staircase at $1m, and in-flight entertainment gadgets at $1.4 million.
What irked Ghanaians most was the construction of an aircraft hanger as part of the deal at $17 million dollars.
Incidentally, the Ghana
Armed Forces had contracted to build a standard aircraft hanger with standard features of maintenance facility, stores, fire tenders and offices for the crew and engineers at a cost of $5m in 2008, barely two years earlier. How the cost of the hanger ballooned to $17m in two years, in an economy with official inflation in single digit, did not sit down well with most Ghanaians.
Apparently, the deceased Head of State wanted the slate to be wiped clean. That is why he constituted what would have amounted to a probe into the deal, spearheaded by his Vice-President and now the successor Head of State.
The late President Mills, set up a committee comprising Hon. William Aboah, Mr. George Amoah, and Brig. Gen. Allotey(Rtd) to investigate the acquisition of five aircraft including Embrear 190 and hangar to the Ghana Army.
The committee was meant to investigate whether the John Mahama led team were diligent, truthful, incorrupt, prudent and authorised to purchase those Aircrafts.
According to "Citizen Vigilante" Mr. Martin Alamisi Benz Kazier Amidu, the then Attorney General, pressure groups from the Ndc never allowed the committee to take off. But the very fact that the late President Mills contemplated this Committee meant that he was uncomfortable with and suspicious of the alleged inflated prices of the aircraft."
NOW WE ASK
So why has President Mahama not responded to allegation of suspicious transactions?
Why was the commission stopped from investigating the purchase of the Aircrafts?
What happened to the promise by President Mahama on 22 Dec 2014 that He will go after corrupt persons and deal with any official who engaged in or abet any corrupt practices?
Does the quote that says " When the President does it, that means it's not illegal" come to play here?
Ghanaians want to know.
Ghanaians have been taken for granted for far too long.
Enough of the corrupt practices.
GHANAIANS DESERVE TO KNOW
#CorruptionMustEnd #GhanaMustWorkAgain
#NOTE
Ghana loses 5 Billion Ghana cedis due to corrupt practices in the public sector.
