Children and pregnant women have to fund their own healthcare. Old men and women are entitled to no benefits whatsoever from the state. Mentally challenged citizens have to fend for themselves, In a nutshell, the health service has totally been crumbled.
Primary school kids are made to contribute towards school buildings, Students in second, third and fourth cycle institutions pay to find their own accommodation as well as for facilities used in their training. Now they are being made to pay for the use of water and electricity which are virtually not available for more than half of the time.
The question is this: it is the duty of the government to provide all these basic needs. And if the government is shirking these basic responsibilities, do we need them at all? Why should we just vote these people into power only for them to enrich themselves and their families at the expense of the ordinary citizens? Just imagine the whole of an institution which the government proposes to turn into a university in a couple of months losing basic services just for owing less than half a million Cedis! Victoria Hammah alone could have settled this in no time if she had continued in government until now. This is so shameful!

I would rather we use these fora to share ideas rather than bashing government and politicians. Students are to pay for utility. This is an idea. The question I think we should be asking is how is it going to be implemented? ...

I would rather we use these fora to share ideas rather than bashing government and politicians. Students are to pay for utility. This is an idea. The question I think we should be asking is how is it going to be implemented? Are the students going to pay for what they consume directly in their halls of residences? Who pays for light and water consumed in shared lecture halls? In the good old days for instance, I had all my classes at the planning department. I had nothing to do with the Great Hall. Would I be billed for Utilities at the Great Hall?
Rather than bashing the idea, I would suggest we help the proposers think the idea through very well before implementing. Thanks

I think we must pay for the oxygen we breath; the footpath we walk on; kids we produce and even the songs we sing at church. If unis can't produce their own water and electricity, then they deserve that

Aren't the students paying tuition and/or residence fees? Shouldn't these fees be made to cover utilities? Students unable to pay utility fees, will they be free to use kerosene lanterns, coal pots, etc?

Academic facility User Fees have always been part of tertiary school fees since the 1990s when gov't introduced what it called cost sharing. Currently tudents are paying 30% of the AFUF while the state pays the 70%. The new directive is not new except if the writer wants to present as a new policy in order to make the gov't unpopular.If by the new policy students are going to bear the total cost of AFUF, then the writer should make it clear.
