My humble advice to the residents of Akyem Tumfa, is that they must contact the anti-mining NGO, WACAM, immediately, to help them stop Step Mining Company and the influential people who are backing them, from destroying their farmlands.
There are powerful people behind such outrages. Recently, for example, it was reported that Victoria Hamah's boyfriend and his business partner, had fallen out over a gold deal - in which about US$260,000 or thereabouts realised from the sale of gold from Ghana which they had taken to sell in the U.S. had not been been properly accounted for apparently.
The question is:how did they come by the gold? That selfsame man had also been accused by Victoria Hamah - who reported him to the Dansoman Police Command - of stealing her money (about Ghc 36,000 if I remembercorrectly).
One wonders if the GRA is aware that she has paid any taxes due on that amount she claimed her boyfriend had stolen from her.
How are we to know that influential politicians determined to become dollar millionaires are not behind the Step Mining Companies busy destroying cocoa farms in Akyem Abuakwa with impunity?
I am pretty sure that WACAM will expose Step Mining Company - which in all probability has not even paid a reclamation bond upfront, and clearly did not follow due process if it is in breach of parts of Act 703.
WACAM will engage the Centre for Public Interest Law to sue Step Mining Company, the EPA and the Minerals Commission in the law courts on behalf of the residents of Akyem Tumfa if approached.
President Mahama's drive against illegal gold mining is being sabotaged by greedy people in his own party - and the activities of step mining ought to be investigated by the National Security Council asap.
We must stop the few powerful individuals with greedy ambitions whose quest for gold is destroying ecosystems across Akyem Abuakwa with impunity. A word to the wise...
