Mahama, tear down this foreign mentality and promote organic farming revolution. There are too many poultry farming in B/A which can help provide organic fertilizer for green revolution. Everything foreign is good for ghana WHY? Those with the PHDs in CRIG and crop research, dept of agric who get all these stupid allowances what are they doing: drinking beer!

Mr American you have a point to question what our experts and research institutions are doing to solve or perennial food deficit problem. I am an Agronomist with special interest in tropical agriculre. GMOs are not as bad as they are been painted. The current state of Africa's Agriculture need GMO techologies in order for us to feed our people; otherwise, plague of starvation will wipe sections of the population off. What we need is made in African GMOs with GMO policies so that we can responsible and sustainalbly use those technologies.
We shouldn't allow the multinaltional cooprations to high-jack our food supply by introducing GMOs with terminator-genes and the patents that go with them. The Rich in America that buy organic is considered a luxury and it is seen as a 'niche market". Africa needs cheap and abundantly produced foods which demands conventioanal agriculture.
I hope this help you to calm down a bit. Yes we have the PHDs, experts and research institutions from KNUST, Fumasa, kpong, etc...funding and policy framework are needed for GMO technologies to thrive in Africa responsibly.

Sorry to inform you that the small holders farmers do feed the nation in fact feed the international market with cocoa. If small holder farmers with their aggregate output can produce enough cocoa beans to depress the world market, why can't small holder farmers in Ghana feed the 25 odd million people here when they outnumber the cocoa farmers by far.
I think you PhD's should continue researching and experimenting with GMO's collect the patents and keep trialling until you have evidence that they do what they are designed to do properly without harming anything. We are not against you acquiring your patents. We just don't want to put our lives at risk just to satisfy your greed. If GMO's didn't go with patents and the promise of a cash windfall, we would all see who the honest scientists are very quickly.

Responsible conventional agriculture is the way forward for Sub-Saharan Africa. The ressistance against GMOs is not about the fear of inherently unknown damages to the environment and to human's in general. The fear is about the monopolyzation of the global food supply by the multinational co-operations that have invested heavily in the GMOs technologies. Dr. Shiva in my opinion does not outrightly reject GMOs, her concerns have always been about Monsanto, pioneer, sygenta,& etc. We also have to critically look into the owners and shareholders of these companies as well as their respective country of origin. If Africa and the developing countries can marshall their own biotechnologies without the involvment of the multinational co-operations then we as food deficit countries stand to gain massively. Organic Agriculture cannot sustain Africa and the developing world. Our farmers are inefficient with the resources at their disposal. On Average the organic matter content in sub-saharan africa soils is about 3%. Most of the landrace varieties of seeds are poor yielding and when planted on infertile soils....double recipie for failure. What I would like to say is that we need responsible policy framework to safeguard African's adoption of GMOs. India is in better shape today in terms of food security because of its past experience with the green revolution. Africa is yet to undertake any meaningful steps toward achieving food sufficientcy....we have to make mistakes in order to perfect ourselves in what we do. India and southeastern Asia is a perfect case study for africa...however we shouldn't sit aloof while our people starve to death. Dr shiva is a very intellegent woman who knows her stuff however her fight against the big cooperations shouldn't thwart Africa's movement toward food independence.

I'm wondering what you have in mind when you talk about organic food. I have farmer friends in the US and from what I've heard from them the term organic foods is simply a hoax or at best a misnomer. What's labeled as organic foods in places like Whole Foods is a deceptive ploy. From a practical perspective I can't see how one can successfully plant and harvest food products without applying any chemicals whatsoever.
