Ms Manji Cheto, an Economic Intelligence Analyst painted a gloomy economic picture which, according to her would be a concern for any investor wanting to invest in Ghana. She referred to the economic indicators on Ghana and asserted that they were all pointing the wrong directions. She mentioned specifically the rising inflation, growing deficit and a rising national debt coupled with falling currency and the declining economic growth and opined that it would be very difficult for any investor to look favourably on investing in Ghana.
Ms Cheto, whose expertise is primarily focused on the political economy of West Africa countries, in particular Nigeria and Ghana and whose responsibilities include monitoring political and economic developments in West African markets and reporting to both colleagues and company clients, made references to the 2013-14 budget statement by the Finance Minister, who was present at the event, and asked serious questions about the deficit financing as well as the dangers of not meeting economic growth and targets. Seeing the budget statement as some work of fiction, she questioned the growth forecast in the 2013-14 budget of 9 percent in the face of IMF recent downgrade of Ghana's growth prospect to 4.9 percent. She also questioned why a forecast growth of 2.0 percent in the first quarter of 2013 only yielded 0.3 percent in actual growth.
She affirmed that Ghana's economy was in a real precarious situation and strongly disagreed with the position of President Mahama, during the recent State of the Nation address on the assertion that Ghana's economic difficulties were only short term problems. According to Ms Cheto, Ghana's economic problems were medium to long term and required deep seated policy solutions. She had very little confidence in the budget and its economic forecasts. She also questioned the recent decision by the government to accept and introduce free SHS in the recent State of the Nation address. Quoting from the President’s own economic analysis in the address to the nation, Ms Cheto questioned where the government was going to find the funding for the Free SHS in view of the President's own assertion last year that “The meat is now down to the bones.". She also wondered if it was not just an election gimmick. "This is a precarious situation. Can the government achieve this goal within 2015 and 2016? Is this realistic? This is about trust, and trust is a big problem for investors.... Is this not just an election promise?" She asked about the free SHS promise.

Ghana is an independent sovereign country and must remain so. The head of state or president is a Ghanaian and must always be a Ghanaian. Even though we associate with English speaking countries who are part of the British Commonwealth headed by Queen Elizabeth we would remain independent and maintain our sovereignty. We are are aware that our wealth is not common with them. We remain a member of the African Union and we would have bilateral ties with other countries and other unions. Let us rally round the Ghana flag irrespective of our political ties.

Those days whilst I was young the government sent chocolates to all schools to be shared to all students to mark the celebration. Can that happen now. what can we prove that Ghana is capable is producing and share part of it to the students rather than fainting at the square/parade ground. The government should think about this and share a little bit of Ghana's wealth with the children to be remembered one day in the future.

The GNA reporter seem to be confusing what happened at the Tema Metropolis and the Ashiaman Municipality. Was the same reporter at both Tema and Ashiaman at the same time. I agree with Kwame and the reporter should come again with the accurate occurrence at the two distinct locations. What I can say about the 2014 celebration of the Independence day at the Tema Sport stadium where I participated shows a demonstration of a high level of patriotism, sacrifices and willingness to die for ones country. The pupils and students at the parade defied the heavy down pour and did match to the admiration of all at the Tema Sport Stadium. As expected there were a few who could not endure the severe weather and had to carried and attended to by the Red Cross Team who did a marvelous job on the day. The security services matched and stayed throughout the proceedings. The dignitaries including the Mayor of Tema, the MPs of the area, the Presiding Member, Assemblymembers and most Heads of Departments as well as the Glergy, the Media and indeed members of the general public who turned out for the love of Ghana defied the rains and got soaked all over till the end of the programme. This for me gives me hope and encouragement that we still have Ghanaian women and men as well as children ready to make big sacrifices for mother Ghana and follow the examples of our fore bearers. An advise to our journalist is not to dwell too much on the negatives but should also present hope for Ghanaians while they give accurate reportage. We should note that we need to have a change of attitude since no outsider can make Ghana a better place for us. Every income earner, whether you are a shoe maker, a koko seller, a spare parts dealer,a consultant, a driver, a commercial car owner it behoves on all of us pay the accurate taxes we are required to pay to the state for our general development. Our public officials and political leaders must eschew corrupt deals and expose such acts while they manage our resources in a more purposeful way so as to accelerate our pace of development. God Bless our homeland Ghana.
