I have always wanted to write about my brief encounter with E K T Addo, and then heard about his re-appointment of 'E K T Addo', as Central Regional Secretary!
I met 'E K T ADDO' few weeks after the 2012 Elections and asked him: "Are you PEOPLE happy with the poor state of Ghana? You PEOPLE, who in the Universities in the 1980's championed Socialism, Nationalism, Nkrumaism and the Glorious Revolution of J J Rawlings: Are you happy about what you have done to Ghana in the 24 years you have ruled us, with the 'unending' poverty, poor sanitation, breakdown of secondary education and all the ills in society? E K T, as usual, laughed, muttering words to the effect that it's indeed shocking!
Few weeks later I met Dick Nelson, former Cape Coast District Secretary, who told me that one of his greatest achievements in his tenure of office was his closure of Refuse Dumps in Cape Coast with the help of EKT Addo, then Central Regional Secretary. Dick Nelson told me E K T Addo supported him to close down the town's Refuse Dumps, and recall with trepidation what he said: "I was worried about closing the refuse dumps after the removal of the heap of rubbish, and therefore asked the then Regional Secretary, E K T Addo: Where would the people throw away their rubbish after we close these dumps? E K T Addo answered: 'Don’t worry about them...Just close them down; the people of Cape Coast are lazy; they will be forced to deal with their own rubbish...", and so Dick Nelson closed down the refuse dumps.
I reflected upon E K T Addo's statement: 'Cape Coasters are lazy; they will be forced to find places to throw away their own rubbish'.
I went to my old bosom friend and told ROCCO, who took me through a journey in my old toen to see where the people actually throw away their rubbish or refuse...They were in the towns, crevices of old hills, natural manholes, drainage gutters, bushes, lagoon, sea, uncompleted buildings and anywhere they can get to throw away their refuse...Indeed, the gutters were choked and the stench and squalor was bewildering...This is the handiwork of E K T Addo and Dick Nelson, who were in the forefront of NDC Political Campaign in the Region in the last 2012 Elections, and now rewarded with another bout of the position of Central Region by John Mahama!
And one can ask: Who is "E K T Addo"?
I have never heard him utter a single word of Fante or Akan during our days at the University of Cape Coast. He spoke impeccable English in his baritone voice, as he bid in 1982 to become the NUGS President against ubiquitous Philip Gardiner. At that time, Socialist agitation had reached its apogee in the Universities as the socialist boys converged at bungalows of their socialist lecturers such as Ama Atta Aidoo, Kofi Awoonor, J E Afful, Tony Aidoo as well as those in Legon like Tsatsu and Fui Tsikatas, Kwamena Ahwoi, Djangmah, and other left-wing advocates in Tech and rest of the Academia to plot how to take over power in Ghana.
These socialists have ruled with Rawlings/Atta Mills/John Mahama from 1982 to 2000 and from 2009 to present day - totalling almost 25 years - 5 Terms of Government or 2 and half decades of ruling Ghana: These people include E K T Addo, Philip Gardiner, Akata Pore, Totobi Quakyi, Hamilton (Karl Marx), Kwasi Adu, Ato Austin, Chris Atim, Atampugre, Goosie Tanoh, Amissah Arthur, Oteng Agyei, Addo Aikins, Brown, John Mahama, Twertwie Poku, Kweku Arhin, Kofi Portuphy, Cecilia Johnson and many more in the present government, playing many, different roles and responsibilities.
They have been ruling this country, Ghana, for so long now and must be held responsible for all the problems besetting us. Their fathers ruled as CPP and their uncles were in governments with Acheampong and Limann from 1972 to 1982, and when Rawlings came, he employed them again to rule from 1982 to present day...
It is the same group of people passing their baton from one to another in their never ending quest for power, not to help their country, but themselves!!! They all were broke men but now living in plush houses and Billionaires...like their counterparts in New Russia, China and Eastern Europe enjoying their trappings of economic gains in the same old West they derided in their student days. I always have a chuckle seeing children of the old communist politburos - Abramovich and Usmanovs and Exims and other children of the old Communists of the East - now parading as Oligarchs, the same wealthy class their fathers had guillotined in the name of the revolution on behalf the masses:
Like their fathers, E K T Addo and the socialist brigade used to echo Lenin's famous words "Workers of the World, Unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains"! Today the same people have benefited from their socialist agitation, and now insulting again the moborowa class...!
Mr E K T Addo now has time to help bring to an end, the unending poverty he and his people have created since they took over power in 1982 to date. On the rest of what he said, especially about Education and schools and so on, we shall discuss it later...
It’s all so surreal, when one remembers these people in the Universities wearing their afro moses and wearing long beards with che Guevara T shirts and beret! I used to challenge them in the Universities that their socialist agitation was merely a covetous struggle for power to enrich themselves as was the days of the CPP veranda boys days, andbetter and that like their forebears in the Socialist Republics of Russia, Hungary, Cuba, East Germany and Romania, they will send Ghana down the drain...I used to look into their power mad eyes and thought...here we go again...Like the bungling Communist Revolutions of old, this one in Ghana under these left wing pseudo socialist intellectuals will end in bitter tears; and it has come to pass.
E K T Addo did not succeed to become NUGS President but his people in the centre of the left ensured he became Central Region Secretary for a long time, and now back again, still with his whimsical ideas.
Like his masters in the socialist league - Ato Ahwoi, P V Obeng, Nana Konadu etc, they talk about problems but no solution until he consults with others. They talk as if they had just come to power. BUT they have had power for so long with an interregnum of NPP 8-year government:
The unending poverty is their handiwork. E K T Addo is an old wine in new bottle: He does not deceive anyone. I hope he helps build the Stadium and Market and help the town that gave him education he enjoys now to end their unending poverty!
Nothing Lasts Forever!
