The Central Government owns the gold in the land on behalf of the citizens of Ghana. The Minerals Commission has the Constitutional power to issue permits/ licences for gold prospecting/mining and the Minerals Commission does it without any prior consultation with the traditional chiefs who are the custodians of thier traditional lands. No traditional chief has any authority on the gold in the land.
Great dilemma for traditional chiefs: The strong youths who could stop the destruction of the traditional lands and waterbodies are the same unemployed masses who survive on galamsey which provides the gold to GoldBod which trades in the gold to stabilize the Ghana economy.
