The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) has intensified efforts to promote breast cancer awareness among residents of mining host communities, urging women to prioritise regular breast examinations and seek early medical attention to reduce complications associated with the disease.

The Administrator of the Fund, Dr Hannah Bisiw-Kotei, made the call during a breast cancer awareness campaign organised by the MDF in collaboration with the Christ Apostolic Church International in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The campaign sought to educate participants on breast cancer, promote early detection and encourage timely access to healthcare.

It also provided an opportunity for participants to seek clarification on issues surrounding the disease and address misconceptions about breast cancer.

Addressing participants, Dr Bisiw-Kotei encouraged women to seek medical attention whenever they noticed unusual changes in their breasts, including lumps and other abnormalities.

She stressed the importance of early reporting and timely medical intervention in reducing complications associated with the disease.

The MDF Administrator also called on men to support the fight against breast cancer by encouraging their partners to undergo regular breast examinations and seek prompt medical attention whenever suspicious lumps or other abnormalities were detected.

She emphasised that men had an important role to play in supporting their partners and ensuring that concerns about breast health were not ignored.

Galamsey remains a chronic challenge

On the sidelines of the campaign, Dr Bisiw-Kotei described illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as a deeply entrenched challenge despite gains made in efforts to combat the practice.

She said sustained action was required to address the menace, noting that the government's approach included promoting local content and responsible mining as key strategies.

She maintained that responsible mining practices and greater local participation in the mining sector were important considerations in addressing the challenges associated with illegal mining.

The awareness campaign forms part of the Minerals Development Fund's efforts to promote health education and preventive healthcare among residents of mining host communities.
