The Akyems used to travel therough the present Akwapim lands to go and buy salt from Ningo/Prampram. They were invited to as peacekeepers after they successfully established peace between the people of Abiriw and Larteh. Ofori Panyin was the chief of Akyem Abuakwa at the time and he asked his twin brother Ofori Kumah to head the peacekeepers. The current site of Akropong was demarcated as a buffer zone and that is where the Akyems settled. To date the Abiriws refer to Akropong as "Borla so". The Lartehs call Akropong Kumah after the first chief. This is the the account to be found in the British and German archives in the 19th century. There is a deliberate distortion of the history by the present day Akropongs. The Larteh Accord established this as the true historical account of how the Akyems came to settle at Akropong. Akroponghene has no jurisdiction over any lands in Akwapim.
