The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, with support from the National Investment Bank (NIB), has commissioned four newly constructed boreholes in Poringong, Wangau, Gambaga and Nanyeri communities in the North East Region to improve access to safe and reliable drinking water.

The initiative forms part of the Minister’s commitment to translating climate action into practical, community-centred interventions that address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations while strengthening their resilience to the impacts of climate change.

For years, residents in these communities have faced challenges accessing potable water, with many households travelling long distances to fetch water for their daily needs.

The newly constructed boreholes are expected to provide a dependable source of clean water for domestic use, improve sanitation and public health, and enhance the overall quality of life of residents.

The intervention is also expected to reduce the burden on women and children, who often spend several hours each day searching for water.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Seidu Issifu said climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a development challenge that affects access to essential resources such as water, food and livelihoods.

He noted that meaningful climate action must deliver tangible benefits to communities by addressing the everyday challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

The Minister stressed the importance of investing in practical adaptation measures that respond directly to local needs, adding that building community resilience requires collaboration among government, financial institutions, development partners, traditional authorities and residents.

He expressed appreciation to the National Investment Bank for supporting the construction of the boreholes, describing the partnership as an example of how collaboration can promote sustainable and climate-resilient development.

Seidu Issifu further encouraged residents to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance to guarantee their long-term sustainability and continued service to future generations.

Residents of Poringong, Wangau, Gambaga and Nanyeri welcomed the intervention, describing it as a major relief that would significantly improve access to clean water in their communities.

They expressed gratitude to the Minister and the National Investment Bank and pledged to protect and maintain the facilities while appealing for continued support to address other climate-related and developmental challenges.

The commissioning of the four boreholes reflects the Minister’s commitment to advancing people-centred climate action through practical interventions that improve livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.

It also highlights the importance of partnerships in addressing climate vulnerabilities and providing essential infrastructure needed to support sustainable development.
