Some residents of the Jomoro Municipality, including members of the diaspora, have urged the Deputy Minister of Transport, Madam Dorcas Afo-Toffey, to use her office to ensure that the municipality's deplorable road network is rehabilitated.

According to the residents, the poor state of the roads is negatively affecting the socio-economic well-being and health of motorists and commuters who use the stretch.

Speaking to the media, Aisha Hassan-Davies, a resident of Jomoro, expressed concern about the poor condition of the Samenye-Barrier–Half-Assini and New Town roads.

She noted that the deteriorating roads have claimed several lives through accidents, as motorists are forced to swerve to avoid numerous potholes scattered along the road.

According to her, Madam Dorcas Afo-Toffey, popularly known in the constituency as "Ebutua Ebutua" and who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Jomoro, has made countless promises to fix the roads. However, she said there has been no sign of even reshaping the road surface ahead of the promised major asphalt construction works.

Hassan-Davies further lamented that "an entire municipality like Jomoro has been turned into a cottage because of the bad and unmotorable road network."

Another resident, Madam Khadeeja Hassan-Yankey, also criticized the Deputy Minister of Transport, urging her to ensure that the social, health, and economic well-being of the people is improved through the provision of good and motorable roads.

She reminded the Deputy Minister that, as the road serves as a major route to the municipal capital, Half-Assini, it is crucial to rehabilitate it to facilitate the smooth movement of people, goods, and services.

On the health implications, Madam Hassan-Yankey said expectant mothers who need medical care at the Half-Assini Government Hospital often endure long and difficult journeys because of the poor road conditions.

The resident also condemned what she described as the Deputy Minister's "diversionary tactics," alleging that Madam Afo-Toffey repeatedly assures residents at public gatherings that the contractor will soon begin work, yet construction has not commenced.

Hassan-Yankey said the people of Jomoro had run out of patience and called on Madam Afo-Toffey to demonstrate leadership by using her office to lobby for the Samenye-Barrier–Half-Assini and New Town roads to be asphalted.

The residents further appealed to her to use her influence to ensure the project is executed, saying that the people deserve the development they voted for.

"We don't want another election with lavish fanfare after a victorious outcome without any meaningful development. Enough of the excuses," they said.

According to the residents, "We see through what she is doing, and we will take the necessary steps to vote her out if this continues."

However, Madam Afo-Toffey has reportedly stated on several platforms that the road contract has been awarded to Kingspork Construction Limited. She has maintained that work will begin once the contractor mobilizes and moves to the project site.
