At least 12 people have died, and 44 others have sustained injuries after a fatal three-vehicle collision on the Kumasi-Accra Highway near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

According to a statement from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the crash occurred shortly after midnight on July 16, 2026, and involved a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck transporting tomatoes, and an empty fuel tanker.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the cargo truck, travelling from Kumasi towards Accra, attempted to overtake another vehicle on a slope.

In the process, the driver lost control and collided head-on with the passenger bus heading from Accra to Bole.

The empty fuel tanker subsequently ran into the crash scene but did not significantly contribute to the casualties.

The GNFS confirmed that the accident resulted in 12 fatalities, nine males and three females and 44 injured persons, 30 of whom sustained critical injuries.

Victims were further evacuated to the Asante Akyem Government Hospital (32 casualties) and Steward Hospital (12 casualties) for treatment.

“The Ghana National Fire Service, together with other emergency response agencies, carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and ensured the scene was secured to facilitate the safe evacuation of casualties and restoration of traffic flow,” the statement said.

The GNFS emphasised that wrongful overtaking remains a major cause of fatal crashes on the Kumasi–Accra Highway and urged drivers to exercise caution to prevent further tragedies.
