The concept of funerals in Ghana need serious work. It is crude and uncivilised, particularly among the Akans. Too long, a waste of time and money, family feuds and noisy. In the civilised world, they don’t delay burying the dead and funerals are not public parties with the noise or drama we have in primitive Ghana. What’s the sense in three or four funeral clothes, decorating the dead three times and spending 2 billion cedis on a tomb? Only fools with misplaced priorities would want to throw money away like that when Saudi Kngs are buried in unmarked graves.

Excellent idea. My only worry is how it can be enforced. The religious and funeral nation status of Ghana is now being attacked. BRAVO to Tema Onukpai! Oobak3!

Foolish! Think about more important things rather than gallons of Akpeteshie and malt for a funeral. Power is not the same as leadership. You can make laws related to noisemaking but you can't tell anyone to end his funeral at 7:00 pm. Provide convenient places where they will not have to disturb anyone.

You call someone foolish but didn't think through your response. They first point was to reduce the financial burden funerals bring to their people. Assuming that they allocate a place for funerals, don't you think that will impose transportation and logistics burdens? The point they are making is simple you can have your funeral wherever you choose but should lower your volume after 10pm. Don't be in a hurry to say the first thing that comes to mind.

In a democracy, you cannot put a cap on what anybody spends to celebrate the life of their departed ones. PERIOD!
TTC come out with something sensible such as banning the incessant burning of used toilet paper by residents every morning everywhere.

What about the extravagant One week celebrations? These used to be private family issues. They have now become full blown funerals.

The Tema Traditional Council has taken a positive step to bring sanity in Tema. However, it appears that the TTC has veered into areas within the domain of local government. For example, how is the TTC going to collect fines if a violator did not pay? Lastly, what orders, rules and regulations is the TTC standing on to impose fines?

Who really cares about where EVERY member of the extended family will be at the funeral. Here the family is just the man, the wife and if any the children. In fact, if a man dies ONLY the wife decides when to bury within that 10 days. No the mother, father, brother or sister.
If the person has no family, the state will bury the deceased within the shortest time of say 5 days.
