The Ga traditional authorities are in a panic mood. They shd be careful of some of their utterances and reactions. They've inflicted a severe pain on themselves from the past. They shd check the relationship that exist between their elites(educated Gas) and those below them.More often educated Ga ppl, distance themselves from cultural and traditional activities that take place in their towns & villages.Making it look like they are more enlightened than the rest.It is not so with we Akans, we take pride getting close to our ppl.In Akan tradition it's unacceptable to wear suits to funerals but some educated Ga ppl don't see anything wrong there. How many educated Ga ppl are prepared to speak their language on the street of London or NY?They are even prepared to extend this bad practice to Accra.

Teach English and the local language of every region in all schools across the country. So in Accra, the teaching and learning of only Ga in addition to English language must be compulsory. Same must apply to Ashanti region where Twi and English must be compulsory, Ewe and English compulsory in Volta region etc. That's the only way to bring about peace and equity and fairness in the preservation of culture. Gradually they'll all phase out through evolution without any fight.

It is just unnecessary over reach .So sad that the man Ga Mantse, who recently nearly got banished from that palace so called he occupied by the Supreme Court is now striving to gain recognition. At Chorkor, James town, Bukum etc of course, may advise that Ga language be taught in school but know where your mandate does not extend. Ga Mantse give aGhanaians and Accra natives some breaks. Let's be honest, ga language can't take you anywhere as many of their people doesn't even travel outside the country. It's a totally useless language. Akan language is literally global. It will be better rather if the Ga mantse or the ga people build schools and teach their language to the students but you can't order government or private schools to teach that worthless language. They actually doesn't bring any development to the country, doesn't have any resources, even they've turned the sea into community toilets, travel the whole of Ghana and you'll notice the most dirtiest location in Ghana is accra especially areas occupied by them. Build for yourselves and stop trying to claim.

@Yes, which of our languages perished when they were not taught in schools or written? And, what were our ancestors doing until Johan Cristaller and co came from Europe, learnt our our language and wrote it for us? Learning Ga is not going to turn kids into Astro Physcists and nuclear scientists. We do not even have names for these subjects in our native languages anyway. The Chinese, Koreans, Japanese etc did not wait for any white person to come and write their language for them. They did it themselves long before any white person set foot on their soil, yet we sit in Ghana or Africa and constantly compare ourselves to them. They do not speak English but they are developed, yes, they wrote their language themselves, that is the difference. To date, I have no idea how to say any of these words in my own Twi , ie.. physics, biology, chemistry, amoeba molecule, bacteria, atom photosythesis etc. Our useless chiefs should not interfere in National Educational Policies. Who in Ghana voted tor the Ga Mantse or our own Asantehene. I hope the govt will ignore him.

Unfortunately, our useless leaders can't even be in control of gh education. Why must waec control education in Ghana? Kids in high school should have an option to study GA in high-school and obtain a credit for it in shs..the same should be allowed in the respective regions..if Northern region has several northern languages, choose the dominant language and give high school kids the option to study the language and obtain a credit as part of their final grades..the education ministry shoukd be the one spearheading this initiate but typical gh leaders so foolish to the core they are looking for areas to deal instead of areas to make an impact. Again, like I always advocate. If you are confused on what to do you can always seek advice from the foreign embassies

But the way we the Ga's feel shy to speak the language in public becomes problematic, what about our homes with our children which language do we speak,is it not English language? What the king is saying must be enforced in the first and second cycle schools.

To His Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse,
I commend your initiative to promote the Ga and Dangme languages in our educational system. While I understand the importance of preserving our cultural heritage, I humbly suggest considering alternative approaches. One potential option could be to allocate a portion of the educational fund donated by His Majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, towards establishing private schools or programs that focus on Ga and Dangme languages and culture.
This could be a great way to leverage the Asantehene's generosity and support the development of our community's educational initiatives. By exploring this option, we may be able to create a more sustainable and impactful program that benefits our youth and preserves our cultural heritage.
Sincerely,

The order is consistent with the national policy of teaching Ga in all Accra schools. The excuse of not having Ga teachers is unacceptable. The ministry of education must review the policy of transferring qualified teachers into part of the country. Each region must be able to supply enough teachers to stay in the region. If a teacher is looking for employment in other parts of the nation, he or she must do so at their own risk of such a move.

@Yaw, none of our numerous useless chiefs who nobody in Ghana voted for should dictate National Educational Policy. Now, on a lighter note, when Kwame Nkrumah, embarked on building schools and other vital infrastuctural projects in Ghana snd introduced "Ghana Free Education Act in 1961" ( bear in mind , it was free education for all Ghanaians, not just the North as his opponent later brainwashed us to believe) . This is what the then Asantehene said, "At this rate of education by Nkrumah, it will be very had for Asantehene to get an umbrella carrier ". . That does not say much about our chiefs, does it? Cheers!

Ga Mantse, you don't have the power to issue such an order, nor is Ashanti or Dagati Chief, for that matter. Ghana is a republic, out of respect for tradition and culture, which is why chieftancy still exists in Ghana. Nkrumah created the Ga Mantse paramount stool; before then, it was a collection of chiefs without a centralised paramount chief. There is no King in Ghana; Ashantihene is not a King but a paramount chief. Check who were the custodians of the land, until the Ga's landed in Ghana. The Ga's should stop that agitation and control over Accra because Accra is not a Ga city but Ghana's capital.

The asantes were a nation on its own with their own king before joining Ghana. He established the chieftaincy system and creates his own paramount chiefs. The fact that they have joined Ghana does not make the paramount chiefs of the lesser tribe equal to asantehene. He ruled his nation before Ghana and the effort to equate the paramount chiefs to Asantehene must be resisted. They are not the same. Asantehene can decide at any time to ove away from this country Ghana and still be on its won and there is nothing any one can do.

Nii should also know that other tribes especially akans specifically Asantes are ambassadors of their language. If you people refuse to teach your language we will fill the vacuum you create. Educate your people to stop that nonsense pidgin English that they pride themselves in as civilisation. The best way to go by this is to speak to the family heads and task them to encourage your people to accept to teach Ga. No one will come and teach if your own people refuse to do it. Fund the organisation and training of your people yourself. Don’t expect the government to go extra mile beyond the general policy in place to specifically help you.

Boss of Ga l wished you would rather have asked schools in Ga to teach hygiene and sanitation in Greater Accra to keep the Odaw river alive ,clean gutters in Accra to reduce floods , street and road sides cleaning streets and pavements free from trading activities, removal of bill boards on road edges and serious grass and tree plantation in Accra for beautifulcation and environmental warming ,if all these are done to will boost influx of tourism. Currently Accra looks like Bamako with no grass, flowers and tree plantation, it's so dirty with hot weather and mosquitoes, the gutters are choked and smelly. The river is so abused with rubbish that it's not habitable for fish .Ga language is good as any Ghanaian language but non of our Ghanaian language is recognised and spoken worldwide ,non of our languages has been translated into local dictionary therefore studying in schools is irrelevant. What should be compulsory in our schools are English and French where Ghanaians can't speak it well .King you rather encourage Ghanaians to.read story books to upgrade their knowledge in English and French because the world is changing fast and Ghanaians should learn to move with the pace of changing in the world other we shall be far behind time.

The compulsary teaching of Ga and Dangbe in our schools in the Greater Accra region should've been implemented long ago. However, better late than never. In any case, my biggest concern is how many Ga Dangbes teach their children our languages and encourage the speaking of same at home. Two of my own cousin's children speak English at home, to make matters worse they do not understand neither Ga or Dangbe. I was brought up speaking both languages fluently. My children born off the shores of Ghana proudly speak Ga. I know my cousins mistake is widespread because many indeginous Ga Dangbe homes do no prioritize the teaching of our languages to their children. We need to reawaken our languages not only at the formal educational level but also at the informal level, in our homes and communities. At the informal level we are the same people killing our language.

My Language, My Legacy
For Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II to achieve his vision of preserving Ga and Dangme through education, he must move from cultural advocacy to strategic implementation. His recent directive to make Ga and Dangme compulsory in basic schools across Ga-Dangme communities is a powerful start—however, it will require coordinated action across several domains:
---
1. Partner with the Ministry of Education and GES
- Formally submit a proposal to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) requesting curriculum integration if he had not done so.
- Advocate for Ga and Dangme to be included in the Common Core Programme and Basic Education Curriculum.
- Push for policy recognition of Ga and Dangme as core local languages, not optional subjects.
---
2. He must invest in Teacher Recruitment and Training
- Launch a Ga-Dangme Language Teaching Fellowship to attract and train educators fluent in the language.
- Collaborate with Colleges of Education and Universities to develop certification programs in Ga and Dangme pedagogy.
- Provide incentives—such as scholarships or housing—for teachers willing to serve in Ga-Dangme communities.
---
3. Develop Culturally Rich Learning Materials
- Commission the creation of textbooks, storybooks, audio-visual content, and digital apps in Ga and Dangme.
- Involve local historians, linguists, and storytellers to ensure materials reflect authentic cultural narratives.
- Translate key civic and moral education texts into Ga and Dangme to reinforce relevance.
---
4. Mobilize Community Support
- Host language revival festivals, parent workshops, and intergenerational storytelling events to build excitement.
- Encourage chiefs, elders, and religious leaders to speak Ga and Dangme in public forums and ceremonies.
- Create Ga-Dangme literacy clubs in schools and youth centers.
---
5. Monitor and Evaluate Progress
- Establish a Ga-Dangme Language Education Taskforce to track implementation, teacher performance, and student outcomes.
- Use student assessments and community feedback to refine the program.
- Celebrate milestones—such as the first cohort of Ga-Dangme graduates—to build momentum.
---
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II's words ring true: "Language is the vessel of culture. To lose it is to lose our story, values, and identity". By combining cultural leadership with educational infrastructure, he can ensure that Ga and Dangme are preserved, lived, spoken, and celebrated by future generations.

So what's wrong with some of you folks and your ingrained tribalism. When it has to do with your region then it's fine but never another's. How dare you! Foolish sense of superiority. Some Ghanaians and foolishness.

I think, teaching the Ga language in public schools in the Ga traditional area is a must. However, I disagree with making the teaching and learning of the language compulsory, particularly, in private schools.
Again, the Gas should ask, why their educated brethren, do not speak the Ga language in their homes.
The problem goes beyond teaching the language in schools. French is taught in almost all private schools in Ghana, but how many private school graduates speak French?
The Ga Mantse should begin by asking his subjects to be proud of their culture and language. That's where it starts.

Will he provide funding for the teachers and ensure they are paid? Does he even seek input before making statements? The educational system is similar to those in other regions, and he lacks the authority to dictate the subjects that students study as guided by GES. Progress within the indigenous Ga communities has been minimal, while areas allocated to other tribes thrive. Instead of concentrating on policies and initiatives that could enhance the well-being of their people, it is noteworthy that even in Accra, the names of streets and other public symbols are mainly in English, indicating a disregard for local heritage. This diminishes cultural visibility and amplifies feelings of alienation. To tackle these issues, Ga chiefs and leaders need to come together to protect their remaining lands, invest in sustainable growth, and maintain the cultural and historical heritage of the Ga people. The struggle should focus on meaningful acknowledgment rather than shallow recognition, aiming to establish enduring frameworks that empower the community and affirm its role within Ghana’s wider national identity.

5000yrs after Ghana’s independence, Gas want to now teach their children their own local dialect! When I moved to Accra years ago, I really wanted to learn the Ga language but who would even speak it? The lady I was staying with was a pure Ga but she never spoke the language, even with her mother who was also 100% Ga. The lady will always go like, I don’t know how to speak it but if they speak, I understand. She usually would lie that she’s not Ga but Fante. However I was been mocked for speaking Twi at times. She would go like, you too speak English! They placed a lot of importance on a foreign language thinking that one’s level of intelligence was measured by how fluent they could express themselves in someone’s language. Now you’re coming back to your roots, Obaake! Welcome to your roots.
