The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, personally led a large-scale dredging and clean-up exercise at the heavily choked Subin Gutter, particularly the section around Asokwa, as part of the monthly National Sanitation Day activities.
In a viral X post on October 3, 2025, the minister was captured in a show of leadership and renewed commitment to environmental sanitation in the regional capital.
“The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, together with the KMA Chief Executive and the Asokwa MCE, Amoh Kamel, has led a massive dredging and clean-up exercise at the Subin Gutter, which has been heavily choked around Asokwa, as part of activities marking today’s National Sanitation Day,” the caption of the X post read.
President Mahama relaunches National Sanitation Day to tackle cleanliness
The Subin gutter, a major watercourse in Kumasi, has historically been prone to blockage by refuse, a factor contributing to perennial flooding in the surrounding areas, including the Asokwa constituency.
The coordinated exercise focused on desilting and removing massive amounts of solid waste that have accumulated in the drains.
The clean-up is a key action under the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative, which was recently re-launched by the Government to be observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month.

The national campaign aims to foster communal responsibility and improve public health outcomes by drastically reducing unsanitary conditions.
Dr Amoakohene's direct involvement in the exercise sends a clear message about the regional administration's seriousness regarding the government's renewed "Clean Up Ghana Agenda."
The exercise is seen as a crucial step in preparing the city for the remainder of the rainy season and preventing sanitation-related diseases.
The minister and the MMDCEs worked alongside sanitation staff, community members, and various youth groups, demonstrating a collaborative approach to tackling the region’s waste management challenges.
Local authorities, including the KMA and Asokwa MCE, are under strict directives from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, to prioritie cleanliness, with sanitation performance now a key performance indicator (KPI) for all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives.
The exercise is expected to be replicated across other sanitation flashpoints in the region during subsequent National Sanitation Day events.
