The Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has raised concern over a disruption of water supply by the Ghana Water Company within the Effutu Municipality.
According to the Minority Leader, the situation, which has remained unresolved for the past two weeks, has led to hardships for the over 140,000 residents in the municipality and has affected various socio-economic activities, such as public health delivery, education, economic activities, and domestic tasks.
“I write to urgently draw your attention to the disruption of water supply in the Effutu Municipality, which has persisted unresolved for more than two weeks. As of today, I can confirm that the majority of the communities within the Municipality still remain without the supply of potable pipe-borne water. This prolonged shutdown has created unbearable hardship for a population of over 140,000, and its effects are being felt across every sector of community life,” the Minority Leader stated in a letter dated August 20, 2025, addressed to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company.
On the impact of the situation on health delivery, Afenyo-Markin noted that the situation has left hospitals, clinics, and health centers unable to maintain the minimum hygiene standards required for patient care.

This situation, he emphasized, could lead to a risk of an outbreak of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and other waterborne diseases.
He added that schools and tertiary institutions have also been struggling to operate in the absence of safe water, leading to a breakdown in sanitation within educational facilities, posing direct implications for the health and safety of pupils and students.
“Families are compelled to rely on irregular and costly private water suppliers. Vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, bear the heaviest burden, with basic domestic routines now disrupted.
“Small businesses, particularly food vendors, hospitality operators, and artisans, are unable to function, resulting in loss of income and a wider slowdown in local commerce,” the Minority Leader added.

He indicated that the current situation threatens the overall socio-economic well-being of Effutu.
He has, thus, called on the management of the Ghana Water Company to provide immediate clarification on the cause of the situation and assurances on when his constituents should expect restoration of water supply.
“In light of the above, I respectfully request that your outfit provides immediate clarification on the cause of this disruption and, more importantly, when residents should expect uninterrupted water supply to be fully restored,” he stated.
