Lower Manya Krobo marks 69th Independence Anniversary

Correspondence from the Eastern Region

The Municipal Chief Executive for Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region has highlighted development gains in health, education, agriculture and infrastructure while urging unity and youth empowerment during this year's Independence Day celebration.

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly used Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration to highlight local development gains and call for renewed national unity and youth empowerment.

Delivering an address at the municipal parade on March 6, 2026, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly, John Atter Matey, urged citizens to reflect on their collective responsibility toward national development as the country marks another year of independence.

According to him, the celebration should go beyond ceremonial activities and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the country’s forebearers and the ongoing responsibility of citizens to build a stronger nation.

“This day is not merely an event but a continuous journey that calls for sacrifice, unity, discipline and patriotism,” he said.

He noted that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” reflects the country’s aspiration to create opportunities and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

The MCE explained that prosperity involves creating opportunities for both the young and old to access quality education, employment, healthcare and security, while restoring hope requires good governance, accountability and national unity.

The Assembly Chief also highlighted several development initiatives being undertaken within the municipality under the leadership of the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

In the health sector, he said two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds are currently under construction to improve healthcare access for residents.

He added that more trained health professionals have also been posted to facilities in the area, contributing to improved healthcare delivery and a steady decline in maternal mortality.

On education, the MCE indicated that efforts are being made to improve school infrastructure and learning conditions across the municipality.

He cited the ongoing construction of a two-unit kindergarten block for Kpong R/C Primary School and a three-unit classroom block for Agomanya R/C Primary School, along with the provision of school furniture and learning materials.

He further noted that the Assembly is also constructing five mechanised boreholes across communities to improve access to potable water.

Touching on infrastructure development, Matey said road construction projects, rural electrification initiatives and the installation of street lights are underway to improve living conditions and support economic activity within the municipality.

Agriculture, which he described as the backbone of the local economy, has also benefited from several initiatives including irrigation projects, fertiliser subsidies and mechanisation services.

He encouraged young people to take advantage of government programmes such as the Nkuko Nkiti Nkiti Programme by registering with the municipal Department of Agriculture to benefit from the initiative.

The MCE also used the occasion to encourage residents to support sanitation activities within their communities, noting that the Assembly organises monthly clean-up exercises to prevent communicable diseases such as Cholera and Typhoid. Addressing the youth, he urged them to acquire employable technological and soft skills while remaining disciplined and innovative.

“You are the hope of this municipality. Equip yourselves with the skills needed to succeed and contribute to the development of our community,” he advised.

Municipal Director of Lower Manya Krobo, Samuel Kwesi Tettey also urged parents and guardians to support the education of their children, noting that strong cooperation between families and schools helps raise disciplined and responsible citizens.

Hebfurther called on all stakeholders to remain committed to unity and national development, stressing that Independence Day should inspire citizens to contribute to building a prosperous Ghana.

The Independence Day celebration featured a colourful parade involving pupils from ten primary schools, ten junior high schools and three senior high schools and cadet contingents from three senior high schools, including Manya Krobo Senior High School, Akuse Methodist Senior High School, Krobo Girls Senior High and Akro Senior High Technical School.
