I cannot guarantee the safety of illegal miners – MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sefwi Wiawso, Honourable Dominic Gyasi, has issued a stern warning to illegal miners, known locally as galamsey operators, to cease their activities immediately or face severe consequences.

He cautioned that the government has adopted a “ruthless” approach to tackling the menace and stressed that there would be no exceptions.

The MCE urged those involved to take advantage of the current amnesty and “quietly walk away,” warning that he cannot guarantee their safety if they continue.

“Illegal mining is a threat to our existence as a people, and we have to deal with it once and for all,” Gyasi declared.

“From what I have observed, the fight against galamsey is going to take a ruthless approach. If you have relatives, friends, or know anyone involved, call them and advise them to stop.

"If they have travelled to other communities for galamsey, ask them to return home, because we are going to deal with illegal miners ruthlessly. I cannot guarantee what will happen to those involved in galamsey in my municipality. After today, I cannot guarantee their safety, so ask them to return home.”

The MCE dismissed the widespread perception that illegal miners are poor and desperate for work. According to him, most are wealthy individuals who channel their profits into real estate and other ventures.

“The signs I have seen show that the fight against galamsey will be unprecedented in this country,” he said. “Illegal mining has led to the death of several individuals. The Defence Minister and the seven others who perished in the recent helicopter crash lost their lives while attending an event focused on combating galamsey.

“Those involved in galamsey are not impoverished individuals. Conduct an investigation and you will discover how they are investing their funds in real estate and other activities. Report back to me if they appear to be struggling financially.”
