I have no doubt that we can learn a lot from Nigeria when it comes to oïl business.
I have in mind the bad experience Nigeria went through in the 70s and 80s when they decided to use oil money to fund free education.
Why can't we find out what happened to their best intended free education policy that ended in fiasco and plunged the country into depression?Don't worry be happy.

Boy Kofi you are right, I was a benefitiary of Nigeria's free education at the University of Lagos in the early 80s as a student from Oyo State and thus qualified for bursery from the government of Oyo State, haven qualified to read Accounting at the faculty of Business Administration. The Government of my State of origin was responsible for the entire fees including bursery meant for my books and other logistics, except feeding. The free education programme collapsed when oil productions became epileptic and as well frought with corruption. The free education then led to deterioration of infrastructure virtually in all Universities across the country cos while the free education was ongoing, little or no attentions were paid to improving standards and upgrading the infrastrutures. Today the evidence of such not well through policy has led to young Nigerians seeking tetiary education here in Ghana and elsewhere Easten Europe in 2nd & 3rd grade mushroom and unrecognised and unacredited private universities dotted everywhere in residential street coners across Ghana. Ghana should be catious and learn from the mistakes Nigeria went through in the 70s & 80s. Good luck to Ghana anyway.

I Applaud Akufo Addo on this.
Another bonus...all this free SHS and free meals would create thousands of jobs in the system. Who is going to provide these free meals? Local contractors...Local Awonyes and Area Mamas. these are the types of jobs the economy should target for provision to help the majority of the people. No foreigner would leave their country to come and cook Ghanaian meals...these types of contracts would go straight to the Ghanaian working and lower classes. EXCELLENT MOVE.

You don't come up with a valid reason to raid your retirement account. It is there for retirement. Why make up a Heritage Fund if you only were going to come up with good reasons to spend it?
The Heritage Fund has only been in existence for less than 10 years and you want to put our corrupt filled government hands on it and waste it.
Pass the Right to Information bill so that we can have an accurate picture of what is going on with government revenue.

Individuals and corporate bodies that spend all their income today cannot think of any income in the future in case of emergency. The same is the state of Ghana. Having set up the Heritage Fund, this is something that cushion the country in future in case of very unpredictable circumstances. I am surprised that we are today talking about using this Fund. Please, let us all agree that saving money for the future is good and hence the Fund at peace.
Currently, due to some funds I set aside on my own in the past, this earns me around 4,000 Ghana cedis a month. If this savings and/or investment was not done in the past, I will not have been earning this money now.
What we have to do now is find why we have a negative return on the Fund. This need to be rectified, and the Fund well invested for the future of Ghana. The argument that the Heritage Fund is not necessary is baseless. If this is not necessary, the Finance Minister should not have worked hard to set up Databank. He should spent the money he used to invest in Databank. Ken, the Heritage Fund is necessary; keep it and look elsewhere for funding for the free education.
Thank you and God bless Ghana.

It is amusing that some people are claiming the Heritage Fund is for the "future generation". Question is, for the "future generation" to do what with it? Where were all these people when foreign loans were being acquired left, right, center by the previous gov't? Do they know, repayment of these loans and interest on the loans are also for the future generation? Why should the future generations bear these loan expenses while the current generation is the one misappropriating the monies through corruption? Education is an investment and to educate the future generations with the Heritage Fund monies which are supposed to belong to them is a good thing. Mr. President, you owe no-one an apology if you use the money for education. It is seed-money, the benefits of which Ghanaians will reap in the future. Go for it, Nana.
