I don't know if Charlotte Osei really knows what she means when she says, based on what she has outlined how can the elections be rigged?
We are aware she has awarded a contract to members of the ruling gov't to print pinksheets to be used in the elections. I want her to think about all the ways the elections cannot be rigged by that action and whether it will stand up to scrutiny.
Secondly, she mentioned ballot papers being validated by a stamp on the back of the ballot paper, after the registered voter has gone through the voting formalities. In the 2012 election petition, the question of over-voting or as Afari-Gyan described it-over-stuffing came up, where the validated ballot papers authenticated by the stamp of the EC found it's way into the ballot box and exceeded the number of voters who cast their ballot. For the 2016 elections, we are being told the ballot papers are still being validated with the same EC stamp and rhat will not allow for rigging. We want Charlotte Osei to think of all the various ways that stops rigging and if it will again stand up to scrutiny.
Thirdly, she is saying there could be the tendency of the media putting out false information and therefore, the EC is being proactive to update the media or journalists on voting day which presupposes, the EC does not envisage the media at the polling stations and thus do not regard the media or journalists who will be at the polling stations as inherently trusted to report on the results or events on election day. And in this respect we have heard of some so called accreditation process.
Given the severe lack of any credibility on the part of the EC will Charlotte Osei examine how the EC providing updates to the media as opposed to working in tandem with the media actually answers the question of there will be no rigging and if that stands up to scrutiny.
There is a plethora of ways elections have been rigged and influenced by gov't's most notably the NDC gov't which has always resisted reforms to ensure credible and fair, transparent and free elections.
That motivation has not subsided on the part of the NDC gov't and actually in this election the desperation of Mahama who has seen his loss as a true certainty, and believes he deserves a second term we believe has ratcheted up his motivation to rig the elections and instead of Charlotte Osei and EC patting themselves on the back for an election in which rigging by the NDC party has become their trump card the EC must raise it's game and thwart and obliterate any form of rigging by first listening, secondly being transparent and thirdly being fair and unbiased. That is when the issue of credible and lawful, fair and transparent and clean elections can be said to have been upheld by the EC.
