If about 47% of PNC delegates thought it wise and expedient to vote for Hassan Ayariga, a man who brought the PNC as well as the entire process of multi-party democracy in Ghana into laughable and shameful disrespect in the last national elections, then surely, the PNC , as an organization, should be considered as a threat to national security.
In this country, the strangest and most ludicrous things happen not at the National Theater where comedy and sensational acts of drama are occasionally performed or, not even in the African films that we watch and which have steadfastly condemned reality into farcical spiritualism, but in the political domain in the quest of all kinds of unsuitable people to become - and who sometimes actually do become Presidents of Ghana.
As for this PNC party, it is nothing more than a mere tribal cabal, out to enforce some apparent ethnic agenda which can only forebode danger for the little stability left in the country.
For a person who considers myself to be completely de-tribalized and therefore not subject to any of those silly, ridiculous, bigoted or uncalled for grudges on other ethnic groups, I am nevertheless considerably alarmed at the seeming entrenchment of crass ethnic sentiments in the PNC - in the name of politics and under the cover of a political party.
Given that this is a country where many or most of the citizens are still extremely tribal-sensitive, this unfortunate development in the PNC can only succeed in provoking other ethnic groups to enhance their most inward-looking vulgar ethnic sentiments to rival and counteract this negative trend in the PNC. We are, as a country, already besieged by suspicions and counter-suspicions of tribal or ethnic machinations by the two major political parties which do not help in clearly defining and pursuing the democratic process towards a more meaningful development agenda.
For the PNC - which fortunately is only just a fringe party, to also further muddy the tribal waters, in such a reckless manner is frightening to say the least. The following is what I discerned from the outcome of their very recent election.
The two contenders for the presidential slot were both northerners.
The Chairman of the party is a northerner.
The General Secretary is a northerner.
The Youth organizer is a northerner.
The Womens Organizer is a northerner.
The Treasurer is a northerner.
Indeed with the exception of the national organizer whose name does not suggest that he is from the north, the other 10 elected executives and Presidential candidate of the PNC, as stated by the above story, are all northerners. Why?
