Last week two events went by unnoticed by our illiterate media ,the first the banning of Islam in Angola and the freedom fight of Scotland. the Angolans having been through a war thoroughly understand the menace of Islam especially through these Lebanese economy wreckers and their rejection of all religions . The scots realize with their oil they are better off going alone as will sooner or later the Fantis or Akans. Today the Akans despite being the majority have been marginalized due to the hegemony of the ewes , northerners and lately we see also the treacherous Gas. i repeat just one point to prove the point , there is not a single Fanti cabinet minister in this govt. yet they claim almost half their votes were from the Akans or Fantis . we must admit the persecution of the Akans did not start today , Nkrumah ruthlessly persecuted any opposition to his wanton spending which led to the first exodus of the Akans mainly the fantis in the late 50's and 60's . then came the rawlings who caused again the exodus of the Akans this time mainly the twi speakers led by the Ashantis . today there is an estimate of from 10 to 15 million Akans living in the diaspora who will support any revolution or war effort that will lead to to the freedom of the Akans . Does he think he will never die? Does he think he can take some money along with him when he dies?. Or he wants to build a country and establish himself a president for life? He is involved in every major defraud of the country. Now he has fictitiously bought a bank for his brother and with this deal the brother can pocket 70% of what he owed to the bank. It is interesting that AFAG and CFA started seeing corruption only when the NDC assumed power. We all have to be concerned about governance in Ghana, so every individual or group (AFAG and CFA INCLUDED) have a right to speak up if they feel strongly about something.
The problem is, for such vocal groups to have sprung up only when the NPP lost power gives some of us cause to suspect their motives. For example, I never heard new anti-corruption advocates like Andrew Awuni & Co complain about corruption and graft that took place under the NPP. At least, unlike the case of the Merchant Bank, Mr. Awuni never took interest in cases such as the sale of Ghana Airways, Vodafone to chronies and the appropriation of prime lands in Accra and government bungalows to themselves. Can somebody ask why? I sometimes wonder whether the former JAK spokesman was "really" in Ghana in those times!
I am not being personal, but I was surprised when I saw the photo of the massive mansion Mr. Awuni put up while he was serving under President Kufour. Did he acquire this mansion with his salary? Or are we saying because that was under the NPP, then we just have to assume that everything was acquired through legal means? So, is it about the name of the party in power or about the actions of the individuals in control of the government machinery?
Ghanaian society is afflicted by stark ignorance, so all you have to do to gain attention and win loyalty is to buy media time and start talking "plenty"! That is exactly what AFAG and the CFA are doing now. What they probably don't know that people are aware that many of their members who have now turned themselves into saintly patriots of Ghana engaged in deep graft while the NPP was in power. Besides, discerning Ghanaians know that their agitations have less to do with their love for Ghana than in has to do with a grand plot to discredit the Mahama government, in the hope that Ghanaians will show some sympathy towards the NPP next time round and bring them back to power to "resume operations".
Whether or not they will succeed in achieving this goal with this strategy is another thing. The critical point, however, is that if we want this country to progress, we must eschew this hypocrisy and unhelpful partisanship that is guided only by the self-serving quest for power.
While I agree that we must all be concerned about good governance, I think this unhelpful and selfish political attitude where we "see and hear no evil" when we like the government and "see and hear only evil" when our party is out of power will only carry this nation into an abyss.
There has never been one occasion in Ghana's history where the opposition has accepted that the ruling has achieved EVEN ONE GOOD THING for the country! How can this be possible?
By running down our governments only in the hope that it loses the next election, we only succeed in engendering chronic hopelessness among the people. And - make no mistake - the hope that is sapped from the people this way can never be restored by merely replacing one government with another without the necessary change in our political attitudes. At best, it will only allow a repeat of the same cycle - on and on and on, while the nation achieves absolutely nothing!
Democracy was crafted to help nations progress by giving them the option of choice. That is why many believe the way forward for Africa is to democratize.
However, in spite of its cast resources, the way we Africans practice democracy would only push the continent to run around in circles with no clear path to progress and development.
