Those who disagree with or criticise our development and governance options do not provide any suitable or better alternatives” they have the alternatives, until you disrupt them, removing the finest brains from power for the suck ups. This is coming from hacker intrusions into my computer. Now you own the world with your developments.
Paul Kagame
President of Rwanda
Speaking this year on the death of Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Rwanda's President Paul Kagame was clear about both countries' lukewarm relationship with a Western version of democracy.
"Invariably, the question has been raised about whether the emphasis on development and the role of the state in it is not done at the expense of democracy and people's rights.
"Those who disagree with or criticise our development and governance options do not provide any suitable or better alternatives. All they do is repeat abstract concepts like freedom and democracy as if doing that alone would improve the human condition. Yet for us, the evidence of results from our choices is the most significant thing."
President Kagame is not alone in questioning multi-party democracy in the African context. Indeed, US historian William Blum in a recent book describes democracy as a Western imposition on Africa - "America's deadliest export" and foreign policy tool.
Consequently, there has been some discussion as to how to "Africanise" democracy. Mr Zimba suggests incorporating traditional power structures into formal government.
"At the moment chiefs are seen as political footnotes, even though they are often more effective and revered than politicians. Politicians recognise the influence of traditional leaders on how communities vote during elections and try to manipulate this. A better system would be some kind of bicameral government, even giving traditional leaders legislative powers."
As with any healthy democracy, there is a range of opinions and robust debate, but the consensus seems to be that whilst democracy is not delivering as well as it could be for Africa, it remains the most viable form of government for the continent.
Mr Ngoma sums it up: "Democracy on paper is very beautiful, but the practice depends on what practitioners actually do - and often they're not doing very well."
A view from Zambia
Pamela Chisanga
ActionAid Zambia
Following the return to multi-party democracy in 2001, Zambia has held successful elections with peaceful leadership transition, earning the country the reputation of a "blossoming democracy" in Africa.
Unfortunately, successful elections are as far as democracy goes in Zambia. Successive governments have remained largely unresponsive to the demands of citizens. In 2011 the Patriotic Front won the presidential elections and ascended to power, promising changes within 90 days. The slogan of "more money in your pockets" was obviously very appealing to many Zambians desperate for a better life.
Unfortunately Zambia's democracy is now under threat as constitutional breaches abound, freedom of expression and of assembly are being harshly curtailed. I have personally been threatened with arrest for holding a meeting without "permission". I have worked in the development sector in Zambia for close to 15 years and I had never experienced this even under leadership that was thought to be very difficult. Subtle threats for many civil society leaders are now the order of the day. The legislature is in turmoil with endless by-elections.
With poverty levels as high as 70%, Zambians now know elections are not enough and can no longer continue to watch as leaders fail to deliver on promises and on basic social services.

You mean when life become difficult in Ghana? If so, how do you expect the NPP leaders to help their foot soldiers when they are not the ones governing?
How exactly are they going to abandon them and what material things can their leaders provide them?
My friend, politics is just competition of ideas and ideals and has nothing to do with provision of material things....the latter happens when the economy is good or the country is governed successfully to meet the needs of the people.

Oh! Yeah? So you are elated cos the "Akanfoo" has seen it fit to put one of you at the head of that visceral "Akanfoo" institute? Obviously you don't know your history otherwise you'd know how much your people had contributed in human tolls and in slaves in advancing the agenda of that "Akanfoo", and despoiling and underdeveloping your own backyard. But since you no doubt belong to the overlord ethnic groups, just like this new appointee, responsible for conscripting and raiding your "minorities" for the slave armies and markets of Salaga and the Gold Coast, I expect you to keep your solidarity with your former "akanfoo" overlords, hoping some dregs might drop on you, as it just did for Hamid! Good for you.
As for me, when I see on TV pictures of the crass backwardness in Ghana, courtesy of Joynews, the northern regions in particular, I wonder why some people can be so conservative to embrace a party like the NPP, and not a state-centred party like the pro-Nkrumahist parties. In fact, the NDC is even too conservative for me!
The mantra of private enterprise, property grabbing democracy CAN NEVER solve the problems of underdevt I see in Ghana. Major state intervention is seriously needed.

This Andy CY chap, in spite of your protestations, you must definitely be NDC. Your warped logic is synonymous with all NDC people that I know of.
Your random tendency to also cut-and-paste and misquote, history merely to suit or advance your bigoted narrow ethnic proclivities is another syndrome of the NDC psychosis which it seems, has afflicted you in a bad way.
Much as I agree with you that the so-called property grabbing democracy can never solve the problems of under-development, I also think that isolating oneself from a problem and standing on the sidelines to give disjointed, incompatible and provocative social commentary also does not help. In fact it is counter-productive.
It is of no use cooling off in the bosom of the arch-enemy and throwing stones at your potential allies who are the only ones who you can depend on to improve what you describe as conditions of "crass backwardness in Ghana". We need all hands on deck, not on the lifeboat.
Whether Asantes enslaved Northerners centuries ago or are doing so today is not what the major problems of Ghana are today. Even if that was the case, any wise person would know that the best way way to go around it would be to attempt to solve that problem and not to worsen it by applying provocative jibes and commentary.
Tribalism, of the sort you suffer from, is like being high on booze or cocaine. It is an imaginary condition borne from unreal delusions of a persecution complex. All tribes and indeed all human beings have all got their behavioral traits which may not go well with others at any one time or the other. As civilized beings we all have to comport by accommodating and smoothening off our rough edges.
Now instead of wasting all your time and energy fomenting such provocative rubbish, you could put the better part of your good mind to more productive sentiments. Its even better fro your health.
Life is short and we should try our possible best to sift out our real problems from the petty ones and deal with them as such - with real solutions.

Some of you Northerners are either ungrateful or plain stupid.
Had it not been Kwame Nkrumah, the man who Danquah and his clique tried so hard to demonize and assassinate, the entire Northern territory would have continued to remain under-developed and backward. As you should very well know, it was Kwame Nkrumah who single-handedly opened up the North to real development and civilization. Even 50 years after Kwame Nkrumah had been unceremoniously overthrown by the joint criminal effort of foreign intervention and the Danquah-Busia gang, what has been added to the development of the entire North that can be compared to what Nkrumah achieved in less than 10 years?
Danquah and his lot had no respect whatsoever for ordinary people, they contemptuously referred to them as 'veranda boys' meaning that like street children, they were so useless and unproductive that they slept on peoples verandahs. How much more Northerners at the time?
I am not a Northerner, I am surely not an NDC supporter and I am also definitely not an NPP suporter either. But I cringe at the way Ga's and especially Northerners shamelessly allow themselves to be used by these two particular political parties without getting much in return.
As for Othcere Darko, I think that whoever gave him that new job outside the country, should be profusely thanked for making it possible for us to get rid of him.
