The National Women's Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mavis Hawa Koomson, has strongly criticised Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang over what she describes as her continued silence on issues affecting women in Ghana.

According to her, despite being the first female Vice President of Ghana, Professor Opoku-Agyemang has failed to publicly address critical issues concerning women, a situation she believes is disappointing and embarrassing to Ghanaian women.

Hawa Koomson has therefore called on the Vice President to break her silence and speak out on matters affecting women, particularly the alleged sexual abuse scandal involving at least 19 female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East expressed disappointment in the Vice President, urging her to demonstrate concern for the welfare and protection of women and girls.

She questioned how the Vice President would feel if her own granddaughter were subjected to similar alleged sexual abuse, stressing the need for her to publicly condemn such incidents.

“I am calling on the Vice President, who is a woman and a grandmother, to ask herself whether she would be happy if someone did this to her granddaughter. His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama should also ask himself whether he would be happy if someone did this to his daughter,” she stated.

Hawa Koomson further appealed to Professor Opoku-Agyemang to use her position to advocate for the protection of women and girls, insisting that her silence on such matters was disappointing.

“So, I am begging Her Excellency the Vice President to speak about these issues because she is disgracing women. Whenever issues concerning women arise in this country, she remains silent. For once, she should speak so that we can applaud her,” she added.

Her remarks come amid growing public concern over allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

The controversy has sparked widespread discussions about the safety of female students, accountability within educational institutions and the need for authorities to take decisive action against sexual misconduct in schools.
