A prominent youth advocate, Dr Patrick Essien, has declared his intention to contest the Deputy Regional Secretary position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region.

Dr Essien, who has contributed significantly to the growth and development of student organisations, including the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) and Private University Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG), is expected to leverage his experience in youth advocacy to attract more young voters to the NDC if elected.

His extensive experience in leadership, youth mobilisation and organisational development is also expected to strengthen the party's grassroots structures and enhance its electoral fortunes in the region.

Through his foundation, Dr. Essien has undertaken numerous initiatives and participated in several activities aimed at promoting youth development and community empowerment. These engagements are expected to enhance his chances of securing the position and contributing to the growth of the NDC in the Central Region.

Dr Essien, who currently serves as Deputy Director of Mining at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has stated that his decision to contest the position is driven by his commitment to promoting discipline, accountability and honesty within the party.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Dr Essien, who also serves as the NDC's Deputy Regional Welfare Director in the Central Region, disclosed that he intends to work closely with party executives and other stakeholders to strengthen the party's structures and position it for victory in the 2028 general election.

He explained that his engagements with party members across the region had reinforced his conviction that he possesses the leadership qualities and experience needed to contribute meaningfully to the party's reorganisation and electoral success.

According to him, his interactions with grassroots supporters and party executives have revealed growing confidence in his ability to promote discipline, transparency and accountability within the party's regional structures.

“Party people and executives kept reminding me when I visited them in their communities that they see me as a man who will come and instil discipline in our party, ensure accountability, and be honest with party executives and the leadership of the party,” he said.

Dr Essien further expressed his readiness to support whoever emerges as the NDC's presidential candidate, stressing the importance of unity, effective coordination and grassroots mobilisation in securing victory in the 2028 general election.

Dr Patrick Essien is among the contenders seeking to take up a key administrative leadership role within the NDC in the Central Region as the party prepares for its next internal elections and intensifies efforts to reorganise ahead of the 2028 general election.
