'You called a whole Chief Justice NPP Women Organiser' – Ellen Daaku slams NDC over arrests

Ellen Ama Daaku, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team member and aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has sharply criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the government for what she describes as inconsistency and unfairness in the rearrest of the party's Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, Abronye DC.

"Honestly, I really cannot understand this issue. Didn’t they frustrate a sitting Chief Justice? So, if Abronye called a judge a politician wearing a sack, what is wrong with that? If it were me, I would have said even more,” she said.

Speaking on United Television's Adekye Nsroma, monitored by GhanaWeb, on May 14, 2026, Daaku expressed disappointment at what she sees as the NDC's double standards.

She particularly criticised how they handled issues concerning the judiciary when they were in opposition, compared to their posture in power.

To reinforce her argument, Daaku cited past NDC statements about former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo when the party was in opposition.

“You called a whole Chief Justice an NPP Women Organiser. The NDC, including President Mahama, tagged a whole Chief Justice as an NPP member to the extent of calling her the party’s national women's organiser, even though the party already has its own women’s organiser. Yet, when you were in opposition, insulting judges, we never arrested any of you," she stated.

"So, for you to now tell us to accept the judgment quietly, it’s neither here nor there. You frustrated Justice Torkonoo while in opposition, and the moment you gained power, you removed her as Chief Justice," she added.

She also referenced past statements made by President John Dramani Mahama about the Judiciary, stressing that the current administration is reaping what it previously sowed.

Daaku added that President Mahama’s earlier remarks about Supreme Court judges have set the tone for how political parties view the judiciary, and expressed little surprise at the current situation regarding judges’ perceived political affiliations.

“President Mahama himself, at the time, claimed that all judges at the Supreme Court were members of the NPP. He even encouraged other judges to go back to school because when the NDC came to power, they would employ them. So, I’m not surprised that the current judges being posted to various courts are NDC members,” she stated.

“If you people could call the Chief Justice an NPP Women Organiser and still remove her from office, and yet Abronye only talked about a circuit court judge, and you arrest him, [it's bizarre] what wrong did he do? That means President Mahama and all your communicators should also have been arrested for the things they said before coming to power,” she fumed.
