Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has raised concerns about what he describes as growing tensions between government appointees and party executives, warning that poor coordination is affecting internal party management.

Speaking in an interview on Onua TV on May 14, 2026, he said President John Dramani Mahama is “suffering” due to the conduct of some of his appointees.

He explained that some fail to engage with party structures and sometimes the party’s General Secretary has to intervene to summon some ministers for accountability.

“The president is suffering… it had to take the General Secretary sometimes to summon ministers before they come,” he said.

Gbande also alleged that some ministers do not regularly attend party meetings, although he acknowledged that some have recently begun showing up.

He recounted questioning a minister over whether proper procedures were followed when party representatives were sent out.

“Recently, I had to call one minister to ask, 'you sent so-and-so to the party. He said, yes. I said, did you inform the General Secretary? I asked him, Are you the manager of the party? Are you the one managing the party? You don't manage the party. The party has executives who manage the party'" he stated.

Gbande further warned that ignoring established structures could lead to internal conflict within the party.

“If you don’t respect them, you create a crisis,” he added.
