The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, was intercepted and questioned at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol over an arrest warrant reportedly issued by authorities in the United States.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dafeamekpor said the MP was stopped on Sunday morning while travelling to London on a private trip, although he was using a diplomatic passport.
He said he was informed that the arrest warrant forms part of an international alert system that allows enforcement action to be carried out across jurisdictions once circulated through global security networks such as Interpol.
“The point is that the Asante Akyem North MP was intercepted and interrogated for some minutes and was told that there is a warrant issued by the United States government for his arrest and extradition."
“And that a warrant of arrest, once it is issued and given to Interpol, can be executed anywhere, whether it is known to your home country or not,” he stated.
The South Dayi MP disclosed that legal arrangements have since been made to support the detained legislator, including securing the services of a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague.
“We have been doing some coordination since Monday. We have got him a lawyer, a Hague-based lawyer, a Ghanaian based in The Hague, to advise him,” he stated.
Dafeamekpor noted that the legal team is still awaiting full disclosure on the basis of the warrant and the exact allegations behind the US extradition request.
“We are still waiting for the basis for the issuance of the warrant,” he noted, explaining that only limited details had so far been made available.
He also urged the public to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media, insisting that lawyers involved in the matter are relying strictly on official and verified information.
According to him, legal teams in The Hague are actively handling the matter, with relevant documents already submitted as part of ongoing coordination efforts.
