The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not take spiritual matters lightly and should not be underestimated.
According to him, his long experience in life has shown that spirituality plays a crucial role in politics and leadership.
“The NDC doesn’t joke with spiritual matters. Don’t take them for granted. Since I was born, I have lived long enough to know what happens in this world. Life is all about prayers. You may perform well but people may not even hear about you,” he said in an interview with UTV's Adekye Nsroma on March 2, 2026.
He cited former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as an example, noting that despite championing digitalization an agenda that has now become central to Ghana’s development his message did not resonate widely during his campaign period priori to the 2024 general elections.
“What sin did Bawumia commit? He was preaching digitalization, and today everything happening in the digital world is what he spoke about. But when he campaigned on that, nobody heard him. Did we pray for him?” Afenyo-Markin asked.
He also mentioned the 2024 running mate of the NPP Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), questioning whether prayers were offered for him during his political journey.

“I heard people talking about NAPO. What did he do? Did we pray for him? My conclusion is that we must pray in everything. As a party, we need to mount a firewall and that firewall is prayer.”
Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the NDC has consistently relied on spirituality and this has helped them avert unforeseen circumstances. He urged the New Patriotic Party to adopt a similar approach.
He further argued that the NDC has lost touch with the people by deceiving Ghanaians and expressed confidence that the NPP will win the upcoming 2028 general elections.
