The bombing of the Convention People's Party (CPP) events, including incidents in the early 1960s, was part of a violent campaign by opposition elements—primarily from the United Party (UP) and its predecessors (such as the National Liberation Movement)—to destabilize the government of Kwame Nkrumah.

Frustrated by their inability to defeat the CPP through democratic, electoral means after 1951, elements of the opposition resorted to terrorism, using bombs to create chaos and undermine the legitimacy of the government.
Key reasons for the opposition's violent actions included:

Frustration with Serial Election Losses: After the CPP won multiple elections (1951, 1954, 1956), the opposition felt the democratic system was blocked and shifted to violence to stop the CPP from leading Ghana to a one-party state.

Political Discontent: The opposition disagreed with Nkrumah’s swift, radical approach to independence ("Self-Government Now") compared to their own preferred, gradual approach.
Regional and Economic Grievances: The National Liberation Movement (NLM) was rooted in Ashanti, and opposition grew from discontent over the Cocoa Purchasing Company and the fixing of cocoa prices, which was used to foment violence.
Targeting Nkrumah: The bombing at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 6, 1964, was part of a series of attempts on Nkrumah's life, specifically intended to kill him during an independence anniversary celebration.
