Alan Kyerematen’s New Party Redefines Ghana’s Political Landscape
In recent years, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has drawn criticism from some members who claim the party has become centered around family connections, close associates, and loyalists.
Amid this internal discontent, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen has announced the formation of the United Party Plus (UPP). The new political organization aims to bring together members and supporters who feel sidelined within the NPP structure.
The move has effectively created two identifiable factions within Ghana’s center-right political space: one aligned with President Akufo-Addo and his supporters — informally referred to by some observers as the “Nana People’s Party” — and the other around Kyerematen’s emerging United Party Plus platform.
Political analysts say this development could reshape voter dynamics ahead of future elections, potentially dividing the traditional NPP base and introducing new competition within the broader liberal-conservative movement in Ghana.
While supporters of both sides emphasize unity and shared ideology, the evolving situation suggests a period of redefinition for the NPP and for Ghana’s political landscape as a whole.

I watched the Prof on Channel One TV last night. I must say I was disappointed with the Profs statement. I believe that after 7/8 ears of the policy people saw it as an entitlement. And also because human behavior changes over time, their expectations changes.
One one single political party has stayed in power forever because of a good policy they once implemented. Voter behavior is very complex. A bad road network can make a voter change their minds on election Day even if you built them STEM school

Who lies like NPP? The most regrettable thing that happened to Ghana. Propaganda into power and nothing else than corruption. Ghanaians are not stupid; we have learnt our lessons. As for Nana Addo, the least talked about him, the better. Ken Ofori Atta, the all white devil and chameleon, he was just allowed to take Ghana’s money with his aides from Databank while the system was only sitting down unconcerned. Databank and Enterprise Insurance should be well investigated. The Auditor General, EOCO and NBI should be best at their jobs.

Or
All 60% of students from A schools must be reserved for fee paying while the remaining 40% must be community based merit free SHS based on their BECE results.

Most People in Ghana vote based on their stomach and their pockets regardless of any policy even if that policy is coming from Heaven. Fianyo, I think the discussion should be on how government is able to let kids of parents that evidentially cannot support paying for boarding school to go to boarding school for free.it is true many people from the North went to school for free for a long time which itself was not fair to the poor in the South. I think the solution to the problem is to get many good day schools as possible as is the case in many countries around the world. I guess it is because certificates mean so much to us that is why we don't care that at University of Ghana you can have 600 students in class for some of the social sciences

Prof. I am sorry, I think you got it wrong here. How can paying for Boarding, as you say, bring quality students to parents? I can't think far! I believe that how to produce quality education must be a different discussion altogether. Making the SHS FREE has nothing to do with the quality of it. The entire education delivery system must be scrutinized, including discipline, low moral standards in schools, insecurity of Teachers, lack of Teachers' control over students, unacceptable attitude of many parents towards Teachers concerning their ward's and many more. The so called FREEDOM OF THIS FREEDOM OF THAT is mostly what has brought us where we are now.

The learned Prof and former Vice Chancelor of the UG was my senior at Presec. I find the vilifications his statement has attracted, most unfortunate.
My view of the FSHS is that it was wrongly targeted. It should have been targeted at the urban and rural poor to grant access to education for the poor and vulnerable.
Some of the schools should have been designated fee-paying for the affluent parents to send their children there. Those grade A&B schools, while those hinterland schools are designated FSHS for the poor and needy to access.
On quality the prof should be reminded that before the introduction of FSHS, some students performed poorly, even at Presec.

Professor, let’s go back to Free education for the people from northern Ghana who were beneficiaries of Free SHS and the Universities; including President Mahama. From your assertion I am guessing it was wrong to give the North free education right?. The country did not get their money’s worth; The Northerners have enjoyed free education funded by the wealth of the southerners. A government decides to give free education to ALL Ghanaians and suddenly that is wrong. Ok let’s cancel free education for ALL Ghanaians from South to North.

Why must so-called intellectuals always seek to score cheap political points when making arguments. Yes, the NPP started the FSHS in 2017 or so after it was elected. It went on to win the 2020 elections but lost in 2024. So, what exactly has the quality of FSHS got to do with the NPP's not coming back to power in 2024? Was FSHS a lone determining factor on the NPP winning or losing the elections? This kind of crap reductionist intellectualism is sickening, really. No wonder we are wallowing in mediocrity, unable to think ourselves out of the maze of stupidity that keeps us trapped as a debt ridden but self-gloating nation.

Education brings development, not development brings education" reflects the idea that education is a primary driver of development, while development in turn can create conditions that support education. A population that is educated can develop new technologies, improve productivity, and foster innovation, which drives economic growth and social progress. In turn, as a society becomes more developed and prosperous, it has greater resources to invest in and expand access to education for its citizens.
