Veteran media practitioner Kwesi Pratt Jnr has urged individuals with political ambitions to engage in deep introspection before running for office.

Speaking on a recent edition of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, the managing editor of the Insight Newspaper cited the upcoming parliamentary primary scheduled by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tamale Central Constituency.

He noted that the circumstances surrounding the election have made it easy for various individuals, including those he deems incompetent, to file their nominations to contest.

“Tamale has become a free-for-all. In Tamale Central, if one can pull through the NDC primaries, they are almost guaranteed to become an MP. That’s why people are falling over each other. Everyone wants to contest, and the last time I checked, there were 17 contenders,” he said.

EC sets September 30 for Tamale Central by-election

“Good Lord, 17 people! One among them, when I watched his video and listened to the things he said, I told myself, ‘God Almighty, so this person also wants to be in Parliament? He is actually going to be called Honourable?’” he questioned.

Without mentioning specific names, the veteran journalist further questioned the suitability of some individuals who have expressed interest in Ghana’s presidency, noting that such individuals might not have considered running if they had conducted thorough self-reflection.

“I mean, when I listen to the way he speaks and the comedy he puts on… If possible, when a person looks in the mirror and observes that their pockets are deep enough to conclude they want to contest for political office, there are some critical questions they should also ask themselves,” he said.

“There are some people who, when you look at them and listen carefully, you are compelled to ask yourself exactly what they see in themselves to insult Ghanaians in such a manner. Because it is an insult; when you look at some of the people interested in becoming president, they just don’t respect us. They don’t take us seriously. If they respected us enough, would they even consider the idea of becoming Ghana’s president?” he questioned.

Ayariga's APC to unveil candidate for Tamale Central by-election

Following the death of the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Electoral Commission has set September 30, 2025, to hold a by-election to replace him in Parliament.

Ahead of the election, the opposition New Patriotic Party has announced its withdrawal from the contest, citing the circumstances leading to the vacancy.

According to an official report by the NDC, 12 out of 14 individuals who picked up forms to contest in the party’s primary successfully filed their nominations.
