Embassies made sense at a time when travelling was difficult and electronic communication was rare. At the time, respectable personalities in the form of career diplomats were beneficial and made significant returns to their home countries. Today, all sorts of scum and toadies in the name of political appointees are hand-picked to go and disgrace their countries abroad.
