Perhaps somebody may correct me, but to my recollection I don't think any of Asantehene's predecessors had military protection. If my observation is correct, the reason must be clear: his corruptness and shady dealings make him a target, hence the need for military protection. Good and kindhearted chiefs don't need this. He is none of that.
