‘We brought our IGP, so NDC people won’t suffer selectively' - Nketiah on recruitment saga

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has assured party members of fairness in the ongoing recruitment exercise into the various security services.

According to him, although the government cannot employ all applicants due to limited vacancies, the process will be fair, especially for NDC members seeking to join.

Speaking to party faithful, Asiedu Nketiah explained that the recruitment exercise has become highly competitive because the youth have been denied opportunities for a long time, creating immense pressure on the government. He revealed that out of the over 500,000 applicants, only 5,000 can be recruited.

In a lighthearted remark, he said, “About 500,000 people want to join the police. If we employ all of them, where would they find thieves to arrest, since everyone would be in the police service?”

He further explained, “If you are the president and 500,000 people want to join the police, what can you do? Once you issue an appointment letter, you must pay the officer. Looking at our capacity, we can only recruit 5,000. These young people have been denied opportunities for so long, so the pressure is very high.”

He emphasised that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu, appointed by the government, will not discriminate against NDC members.

“Muntaka is also suffering. We have spoken to him. The IGP was brought by us and he will not be selective to make NDC people suffer. But if the numbers are few, it becomes difficult to share. Let us hope that when things improve, we will be able to recruit more people into the security services,” he stated.

The recent centralized recruitment into the police, immigration, fire and prison services has been marred by controversy, as many applicants reportedly failed the aptitude test.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak explained that the test standards were raised to reduce the number of successful applicants, since the government cannot employ all of them.
