The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared that no member of the party with presidential ambitions will ever become president unless Dr Mahamudu Bawumia first leads the country.
In a video posted on X on September 12, 2025, the outspoken party executive said supporting Dr Bawumia’s bid for the presidency was crucial to securing the political future of other party hopefuls.
He maintained that a Bawumia presidency would open the door for other aspirants in subsequent years.

“If we had supported Dr Bawumia in 2024 and allowed him to become president, by now we would have started counting the four years, and before we know it, his tenure in office would have come to an end and then the next person takes over,” Chairman Wontumi stated.
He referred to the 2008 contest between Alan Kyerematen and Nana Akufo-Addo, arguing that if Alan and his supporters had backed Nana Addo, Alan’s turn would have come in 2012.
“You might be supporting your own candidate, but if we can all support Dr Bawumia wholeheartedly, it will eventually get to everyone’s turn. Anyone in NPP who wants to become president must allow Dr Bawumia to lead first. No NPP aspirant will be president unless Bawumia leads first,” he insisted.
He argued that blocking Dr Bawumia’s chances would only delay the ambitions of other NPP presidential hopefuls.
According to him, the party needs to think long-term and adopt a succession plan that ensures continuity and fairness among its members.
To buttress his point, Chairman Wontumi cited the example of the United States, where Joe Biden, despite being more qualified in his view, allowed Barack Obama to ascend to the presidency first. Biden later became president, which Wontumi said proves that patience and loyalty within a political party can eventually pay off.
Chairman Wontumi further stressed that unity within the NPP is essential for maintaining political dominance.
He warned that divisions or rivalry over leadership could jeopardise the party’s chances of holding on to power in future elections.
