The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed absolute confidence in security preparations for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, urging calm and respect for the electoral process.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Sofo Tanko-Computer, said the NDC was satisfied with the security briefing it received from the police.

He stressed that the party had no intention of deploying its own security, contrary to suggestions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“We have full confidence in the state security. We were with them at the Kumawu by-election, we were with them at the Assin North by-election, and we saw what happened at Ablekuma North,” he stated.

This comes after NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, revealed on Citi Eyewitness News that his party planned to introduce internal mechanisms to protect its members during the September 2 by-election.

The NPP’s stance followed concerns over how violent attacks at the recent Ablekuma North election rerun was handled.

While insisting that the measures would be lawful and non-violent, Boakye’s comments drew caution from the NDC, which warned such actions could heighten tension.

Tanko-Computer noted that the NDC had observed the conduct of security agencies during the Kumawu and Assin North by-elections and expressed confidence that lives, and property would be protected at Akwatia.

“We are satisfied with the briefing that the security gave us today. The setup they put in place clearly shows that they want to protect lives and property at Akwatia,” he said.

He further urged the NPP to avoid actions that could trigger confrontation, warning that “it takes two to tango” and that any predetermined acts of aggression could attract reprisal.

Should NDC have withdrawn from Akwatia by-election like the NPP did for Tamale Central?
