There is a strong security presence at polling stations on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as voters in the Akwatia Constituency vote in a by-election to elect a new Member of Parliament, following the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Reports indicate that as many as 20 armed police officers have been deployed to each of the 119 polling stations. With the heightened security, the exercise has so far been largely incident-free.
Over 45,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the election, which features Solomon Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Owusu Patrick.
Some voters have described the process as peaceful, stressing that the security presence is not discouraging them from exercising their franchise.
A female voter who chose to remain anonymous said, “It’s okay, everything is fine so they [voters] should just go home and wait for the results. I’m not intimidated by the police presence.”

Another voter, Agyei Nyarko Felix, praised election officials for their professionalism, noting that the exercise felt no different from a general election.
“The election officers took their time to explain things to us. There’s good security presence, everybody should come and vote. You should have no fears — if you’re not coming with a bad mind, then you won’t be intimidated. The police aren’t intimidating anybody,” he said.
Voting is expected to continue smoothly until polls close later in the day, after which counting and declaration of results will follow.
