Ghana Card: Remove Voter card and expect Côte d’Ivoire's bloody war - Nketiah warns

General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has warned that, the bloody Côte d’Ivoire experience-that saw the country experience 10 years of civil war- maybe encountered in Ghana should the National Identification Authority (NIA), fail to include the Voter’s ID card as a form of identification for the Ghana card registration.

In an interview with Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the chief scribe of the NDC said, the NDC and the other Inter Party Coalition of political parties including PNC, APC and UFP will fight with their blood to resist the attempt to prevent Ghanaians from registering for the Ghana card.

According to him, people have sacrificed with their lives and prevented leaders from abusing their rights and that example will be replicated in Ghana to allow people register for the Ghana card.

He posited that demanding for birth certificate and passport for the registration is an infringement on the rights of Ghanaians who are supposed to register for the cards.

"We will not agree with the NIA to exclude the Voter’s ID card…Why should Ghanaians be prevented from registering? If people will sit somewhere and prevent Ghanaians from registering, then it would be better not to register. People fight with their blood in places where these things have occurred. Go to Côte d’Ivoire, one man, Alhassane Outtara prevented somewhere from registering his name. It brought civil war in that country and the country was destabilized for more than ten years. It took several efforts before the country was stabilized and today, then man who was prevented is the president of that country.’’



"The people you are preventing from registering their names, do you know the number of presidents in that number?" he queried.

Johnson Asiedu Nkekiah stressed the need for the NIA to rescind the decision and allow people to use the Voters’ ID to register.



"If people will sit and think it is a political issue, they should look at Côte d’Ivoire and what happened in that country," he concluded.
