The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has accused the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) of deploying thugs to intimidate voters in the ongoing Akwatia by-election.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, he claimed that the NPP is using some bad tactics to influence the outcome of the polls.

“The NPP brought some thugs and have situated them at some locations. The national security is working to arrest them. It won’t be long, they will be rounded up, all of them. Nobody is going to be allowed to intimidate anybody here. Allow the voters to do their work,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, voting is underway at Akwatia with over 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots in the keenly contested race.

The NPP is fielding 40-year-old small-scale gold miner, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, popularly known as Owuo, while the NDC is presenting a lawyer, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, as its candidate.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has deployed 484 electoral officers across the 119 polling stations in the constituency for the by-election.

Security has also been reinforced, with more than 5,000 police officers deployed to ensure peace before, during, and after the voting.
