About 95% of Ghanaians are suffering from diseases owing to the consumption of unhealthy foods according to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

The Principal Regulatory Officer of the FDA, Percy Adomako Agyekum who gave the startling percentage attributed the situation to the global burden of foodborne diseases that affect individuals of all ages, in particular children under 5 years of age, and persons living in low-income regions of the world.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Kingdom FM 107.7 in Accra as the World marks Food Safety Day, Mr. Adomako Agyekum explained that the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization play an important role in capacity-building for countries to implement food safety systems.

He reiterated that in a world where the food supply chain has become more complex, any adverse food safety incident may have global negative effects on public health, trade and the economy.
