The First Lady of the Republic, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has commissioned a newly constructed ultra-modern Pediatric and Intensive Care Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, today, May 15, 2019.

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is the second to benefit from the Rebecca Foundation’s initiative, with the first being the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo who was visibly impressed with the success of her Foundation’s initiative also called for a sober reflection on the increasingly declining state of child care in the country.

“...today certainly a happy occasion but today should also be a day of reflection and a call to action. How did we as a country get to where we are today? Where our premier teaching hospital would have such challenges in taking care of our children...I believe it is important to pay attention to planning and its execution...”

“But planning alone isn’t enough is not enough, execution including monitoring and evaluation are absolutely vital. Another area where we fall short are in resource allocation and mobilization.” She added.

She further admonished the hospital authorities to adopt strict maintenance protocols to ensure the facility outlives its purpose.

The need for the newly constructed facility was borne out of the high numbers of preventable child deaths recorded in previous years, while using the old facility which was incapacitated and lacked many essential medical equipment.

The new Pediatric Unit has a neonatal intensive care unit, isolation room, laboratory center, a pediatric intensive care room, a pediatric high dependency ward, a counselling Unit, as well as a large waiting area, among others. It is also set to admit 41 children at a time.

This aside, the facility, according to Dr. Daniel Asare, CEO of the Korle-Bu teaching hospital will serve as the biggest training center for pediatric and neonatal nurses and doctors.

In line with the operationalization of the Unit, Dr. Asare in his address also revealed that the hospital will in the next few weeks roll out the Paperless Patient and Facility Management System, which would mark the commencement of treatment at the facility.

“Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the next couple of weeks will be rolling out Paperless Patient and Facility Management System...In order not to downgrade the standard by maintaining Manual Records Managing System, we have decided to introduce the new paperless record managing system starting from this facility...” Dr. Asare announced.
